Simple answer: Warlock. Just look at all the forums that talk about multi-classing paladins. Warlock regains spell slots on a short rest, and those slots can be used for smiting. Plus, dipping warlock can open your character up to a broader amount of game options. It is such a popular blend it created the Hexadin.
Any time an unfathomably powerful entity sweeps in and offers godlike rewards in return for just a few teensy favors, it’s a scam. Unless it’s me. I’d never lie to you, reader dearest.
Sorcerer imo. Warlock gives you less stat dependancy, but sorcerer gives you massive damage and action economy (two attacks with main action + spell with bonus action).
all three can be merged though: paladin6/warlock2/sorcerer12
My personal favorite is Paladin 11/Warlock 9. At this level, you can have Eldritch Smite, Divine Smite, and Improved Divine Smite all on the same attack. If you want to take the utmost advantage of this combo, I recommend being a Glory Paladin, for the Channel Divinity that gives temporary hit points when you divine smite, just to squeeze the most that you can out of one attack.

IMHO, Earthdawn is still the best fantasy realm, Shadowrun is the best Sci-Fi realm, and Dark Sun is the best D&D realm.
thanks
Sorcerer is another good one, depending on how you envision playing the character.
