In the Light, we gather to empower our brother. In its grace, he will be made anew. In its power, he shall educate the masses. In its strength, he shall combat the shadow. And, in its wisdom, he shall lead his brethren to the eternal rewards of paradise.
Vengeance is my favorite oath, and I've played several paladins who've taken that path. I love the shades of grey that you can explore with it, depending on what type of route your character decides to take. The thing about vengeance is that what one person sees as righteous, someone else might see in a completely different light, and I love the complexity of it.
That said, I've just started playing a new paladin who I'm fairly certain will be taking the Oath of the Ancients (which I'll be taking for the first time), and I'm enjoying the difference quite a bit.
For me , it's Devotion that fits best. Also being a long time Paladin player (1st Ed. AD&D from back in 1980 on), I can remember having the limits of what magic items & gold I could keep, & what tithes I had to pay to my Church. But , Being a 'Devoted Follower of the Light" , or Justice , or The Lawful God of War , or whatever Deity of choice, I've truly enjoyed the class for so long now. I just think , ever since I saw the announcement for the game "Please , by Tyr the Law bringer's Light , don't let this game Suck , Please?" . But , I'm cautiously optimistic that with Curse & Good Old W.o.t.C. (( W.e O.nly T.hink C.ash )) , that it will be fine. I pray that they actually have a fair amount of Voice Talent & VO work done here , like EA & BW have done with Mass Effect , Star Wars: The Old Republic and Dragon Age that this team will dominate & get things done well & good. :-) For Cormyr !
I don't think this is a new game, though. It's a collab between- curse and WotC to make a digital & SRD all-in-one, of which uses DnD 5e for references and easy character sheet management ...etc More like roll20 or fantasy grounds, so if you're thinking this as a new game system / upgrade, might want to check the announcement here. http://dnd.wizards.com/articles/dndbeyond

Exactly that. It's a digital "companion" tool to help you manage your campaigns. It'll go from information databases to character creation and even home brew content creation.

I haven't played a Paladin in 5th edition yet, but I like the looks of Devotion. From a RP standpoint, it's how I've always played my paladins. Mechanics-wise, the abilities look useful and well thought out.
I created a paladin, originally with the intent to go Vengeance, but then I found myself erring slightly more on the side of neutral-evil, due to every single one of my party members being Neutral Evil. It's very difficult to get 4 other party members to not kill children when half of them worship a demon. In order to maintain party cohesion, I talked with my DM and we swapped me to Oathbreaker, and I'm really loving it. While being a good guy is fun, I think being able to do basically whatever I want, plus divine powers, is super awesome. I do hope to get to play a Vengeance paladin at some point, though.

I've never really played a Paladin but that sounds kinda amazing. LOL. I like movies like Taxi Driver ;)
If you really wanted to, you could play a Vengeance Paladin. The Players Handbook only says that the Oath of Vengeance is taken by those who desire to punish Evil, and I know nothing about your campaign, but from what I can glean, you don't seem like the conventional "Good guys." In the same way that the "Good" guys see themselves as good, the "Bad" guys may also see themselves as good, you both want to accomplish a goal that will result in the betterment of yourself/others. Your Oath of Vengeance could be something along the lines of this character from the batman comics. His oath was to "annihilate the forces of justice" in order to get revenge for his dead parents. A lawful evil character is meant to methodically take what he wants within the limits of his code of conduct without regard for whom it hurts. He cares about tradition, loyalty, and order but not about freedom, dignity, or life. My Vengeance Paladin is Lawful Evil, and abides by a certain set of rules set by my campaign setting's dictator/deity combo. They seek to eradicate a cult of the moon, who see themselves as freedom fighters, and as good guys, whereas the patrons of the sun cult seek order through power and strength, and the moon cultists desire freedom to do as they please. Both sides see themselves as the good guys, and the other as the bad guys, but who is to say what is good and evil.
What I'm trying to say overall is, don't fail a DC and fall in the bandwagon trap and do something you don't want to do with a character, this is the world's most intuitive role-playing game, and you should be playing the role that you want, and creativity is your best friend.
Yeah, Oathbreaker is pretty sweet. Another option I had looked at (and another option for the "do whatever you want" paladin) was the Oath of Treachery from the Paladin Unearthed Arcana. Ultimately, I preferred Oathbreaker however. It's got a little more of an evil flair, though.

I totally agree, and that character sounds pretty sweet. I was totally considering going ahead and playing a Vengeance paladin, but seeing as how I had slaughtered some (kind of) innocent people, I decided Oathbreaker was the better choice. I had also enslaved some frog people, so I was less of a Vengeance anyways, and more of a rogue paladin who did whatever. I had also looked at the two Oaths in the Unearthed Arcana, as they fit quite well too.
I've seen a homebrew along the lines of a "Steampunk/Civilization" Paladin where they basically stood for the betterment of the world through alchemical/magical science advancement along the lines of gunpowder, steam and magically-powered tech. Their power is bestowed from the tech gods. I thought it was an interesting starting point for a redone magical system that's based on technology and such instead of "Gods gave me these because I swore to be like this and that".
Food for thought.

Vengeance and Devotion are pretty common, but I think I'm going to have to give my vote to Treachery. There's just something that seems contradictory about the Oath and Paladin stereotype without technically being contradictory. All of the Oaths are pretty top quality though. I really like how everything is focused on the Oath compared to Deity or Alignment. That was a good 5e change.
As a brand new player, my brother suggested that I try paladin out due to resembling the characters I like to play in Diablo. With that being said, what are the differences between the Oaths? I have no idea, but I'm guessing that Vengeance is more neutral than anything and Devotion is more lawful.
I really like playing an oath of vengeance paladin since it gives me an excuse for not showing any mercy to our foes. One time my party let an evil wizard go since we believed him when he told us that he said he was simply following orders and not actually being evil. He later came back and almost killed our entire party. That was a mistake that wont happen again.
Sadly I haven't gotten the chance to play a Paladin since I started playing 5E. Yet ever since I saw the Oath of the Common Man homebrew Paladin, I've thought it looks incredibly fun. http://imgur.com/a/kIa7n

Broadly speaking:
Devotion: "classical" paladín, sworn to honor, justice, truth, protection of the weak and bastion of righteousness.
Vengeance: Sworn to the hunting of evil, blades of burning vengeance. Usually more akin to revenge than "justice". Usually "ends justify the means"
Ancients: Serve and protect light, beauty, purity. Some call them "green knights" as a great number serve nature or fey lords.

Definitely the Oath of the Ancients, I like that the Oath is about Light and hope and joy rather than some kind of lawful crusader, i also deeply prefer the flavor of the green knight style archetype- I also treat them as fey knights in the tradition of oberon and cerunnos, so the whole thing is pretty awesome- it's also pretty cool that they can anti-mage, it adds another dimension to their role as defenders.

I'm always down for some righteous Vengeance. Because I want to be a good guy who really hates that one bad guy,
Hell yeah I am going to Polymorph the boss into a Rabbit. I have always wanted a being a pure evil stuffed into a ball of fluff.

So kind of like a Knowledge Domain Cleric, but as a paladin? That seems pretty sweet, honestly.
