So I'm about to play my first character and it's going to be a hunter ranger so I had an idea that maybe since I have the haunted one background at one point in time multiclassing into warlock with the devil haunting me would be a cool idea and since I have the stats for it I figured it might be interesting. Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated since like I said I am a brand new player.
It is always hard to say what is a good idea and not. Speaking strickly from an optimization point of view, it is likely not the best since they key of different ability scores. That said, it is certainly possible to make it work. For example, playing a warlock (hexblade)/ranger with a very high charisma should work fine because you remove the need for a high dexterity. The same way, playing a ranger/warlock with high dex or strength and low charisma works if you make sure to pick spells that don't require saving throws and attack rolls, since thats where charisma comes in.
In general though, I would say that it is fully possible to play a haunted character and just roleplay that part instead of taking class levels to "represent" the haunting.
I get that I'm just thinking that since all of my group is new our DM just gave us 3 18s and 3 16s to allocate I may as well multiclass and warlock would be interesting just for the options it gives. I would probably only throw 4 or 5 levels into it and I just thought it would be a cool idea.
My gut tells me it's not a very good idea. You could probably make it work, but ranger/warlock just don't synergize very well. I'd probably go straight warlock and pick some rangery type skills and background.
EDIT: For the above poster, you can actually build pretty decent archers out of blade pact warlocks. They can get an invocation to give them an extra attack, they can get an invocation to make a longbow their pact weapon, and they can use their warlock spellslots to eldritch smite (another invocation) with their bow. Add darkness/devil's sight and elven accuracy, and you can get some crit fishing in to try and crit for big smites.
Any time an unfathomably powerful entity sweeps in and offers godlike rewards in return for just a few teensy favors, it’s a scam. Unless it’s me. I’d never lie to you, reader dearest.
I actually feel like warlocks make better rangers than rangers do unfortunately.

I'll have to look more into that since like I said, me and the rest of the players are brand new and our DM has minimal experience. Unfortunately I just have the basic rules since I haven't yet decided if this is a thing I actually want to start doing and until I do I won't spend money, and between UA and BR stuff there is enough intro stuff
Yeah that's what I'm thinking since I don't really know what to throw that 3rd 18 into, so any advice at all would be very helpful. For reference we have a barbarian, a fighter, a draconic bloodline sorcerer, a rogue, and a life domain cleric if that helps at all.
That depends on your character and how you want to RP them. It seems as if your party has all of the bases covered, so you don't really NEED anything. Rangers can use a high Wisdom, but it doesn't really matter. Obviously, DEX and CHA for the ranger/warlock. Warlock doesn't really need anything beyond Charisma, so you're good there. High Constitution is always good for the extra HP. It doesn't seem like you need high Strength or Intelligence. I'd probably go with Wisdom or Constitution, but it depends on you.

Honestly for new players I would not recommend multiclassing at all. If I did MC, I'd take a hard look at cleric. I'd definitely not add warlock and ranger together though, neither provides anything to the other that's really worth having.
For a pure ranger, I am going 18s into dex, con, and wis. 16s in the left overs. your characters are going to be pretty overpowered though, and the DM will have a hard time challenging your characters.

That makes sense however I want to know all my options before deciding and I think it would make an opening for interesting rp.
EDIT: I am actually the only player not new to RPGs, so he wanted to minimize the chance for death, and talking with him has shown that he has made it so we will be challenged, but not to much. We plan to just play an intro adventure before diving into anything to serious, so we probably won't get to keep these characters.
Probable date for our first game is June 5th or 6th so there is still some time left to look into, but so far after considering everything I am leaning towards probably, but I'll have to look into it more, and just see how everything works out.
Assuming you have the stats for the multi class, my only real recommendation would be going "pact up the blade" and using the "improved pact weapon" invocation from XGE. This turns your weapon into your warlock spellcasting focus and allows that weapon to be a short bow, long bow, light crossbow, or heavy crossbow. You didn't mention your weapon of choice and that's why am pointing this out.
I've never played one before but it sounds like an interesting combination.
I actually played a duel wielding ranger with a few levels in Warlock. This was so fun to play and I was regularly putting out very high damage. And the RP for the character was great. I would build another one in the future. Was it optimized? No. But it was fun.

Not sure it was useful, but thats my two cents :)

So what is actually the crux of the question?
I just wanted to know if it would be a good idea and I wanted someone who has actually played to tell me if this would be a good idea
My favorite warlock ability is the eldritch blast, my favorite ranger build is the archer. They don't really work well together.
Warlock Hexblade stuff also doesn't help archers.
Not much synchronicity

That's a good idea thanks. Even if I do follow through with this idea odds are I would only throw 5 or 6 levels into it.

Warlock and ranger isn't a great multiclass combo, but I could see it working decently if you have that many high scores.
