The “Hunter” subclass of the Ranger was always that one subclass I never knew existed in D&D; but when discovering it, seemed very interesting.
It struck as a very “martial-minded” Ranger subclass; forgoing the mystical effects of subsequent subclasses that have come out since...and just wanting to be an incredibly skilled warrior.
And I REALLY like some of the abilities...some of which you don’t see with other classes.
”Horde Breaker” is great for that extra attack against multiple foes...”Giant Slayer” for that reaction-based attack.
”Multi-Attack Defense” just boggles my mind...if you are struck by an enemy, you get a bonus +4 AC against subsequent attacks from them...every turn.
And this STACKS against other enemies on that turn, as well...if they clip you, THEY have to deal with your +4 AC, too.
This essentially means you are getting hit less often; and the value skyrockets the more enemies there are.
Add this to “Tasha’s Cauldron” temporary HP boost; you’re a pretty sturdy warrior.
Then you have “Volley” and “Whirlwind Strike”...either shoot a cluster of enemies with 10ft of each other once...or cleave through anyone dumb enough to surround you. Situational, but any extra chances to hit is great.
The high level stuff is roguish and helpful...”Uncanny Dodge” (for that one multi-attack that DOES hit you)...or “Evasion” (for those devastating spell-saves).
”Tasha’s Cauldron” adds the ability to turn invisible as a BONUS ACTION a number of times equal to proficiency (good number of times at that level)...which means shoot a bunch of people, then vanish...or be a hulking brute that clubs someone, then vanish...or SURPRISE people with arrow, blade or bludgeon.
My indecision is what TYPE of Ranger goes best with these new features to fiddle around with...and what MULTICLASS goes well with them.
I like the idea of a hulking brute...firbolg, goliath, or dwarf...who make the most of “Whirlwind Attack” and “Multiattack Defence”...while perhaps multiclassing Fighter, Barbarian or War Cleric for some combat enhancement. Great Weapon Master is a big bonus for damage.
Or dexterous dancer who flickers across the battlefield, stabbing frequently, but can still tangle one-on-one with that one particular Bad Guy.
...or the machine-gun; using ”Archery” and “Sharpshooter” against hordes...maybe even throwing flurries of daggers with the new “Thrown Weapon” fighting style, turning foes into pincushions (remember “John Wick 3”? That knife scene? THAT.)
...but how about you guys?
How would go about building the classic “Hunter” Ranger with the new additions to “Tasha’s Cauldron”?
Feel free to share character concepts, too (I love that stuff).
I am currently playing archery Hunter. I think you read some of the class features incorrectly.
"Multi-Attack Defense" doesn't STACK against other enemies on that turn. It only works on that attacker. However, it can happen multiple times and doesn't require a reaction. For example, an Owlbear makes a Beak attack follow by a Claws attack against you. You would have +4 additional AC against the Claws attack. However, if the Bandit has a Ready action that is making a ranged attack to the Owlbear's attacking target, then you would not have the +4 AC against the Bandit reaction attack.
Nature’s Veil only stays on until the start of the next turn. However, making an attack doesn't remove the invisible. So it would be becoming invisible 1st then have an advantage on all the attack role. It works very well with the Multiattack feature.
Volley says 10 ft of a point. So it is 20 ft X 20 ft square.
I picked "Horde Breaker" and it works well in my game but Colossus Slayer often is the safer pick.
I plan to do a 7 dip level in rogue after level 11.
This way I can have both Uncanny Dodge and Evasion.
Adding more damage to the single while still good at cleaning mobs.
You're only half-right on Multiattack Defense. It can apply against multiple foes, but each foe gets to hit with one attack against the ranger's normal AC.
Loving Rangers is fine. I do so as well. But why do so here? This topic is just about the Hunter subclass with Tasha's in mind. Not about the Ranger in general, nor about comparing it to any other class. It's just offtopic.
I think everyone loves Rangers, but all in different ways, which is why this forum is so divisive.
On that note, I don't get the appeal of the hunter, as an archetype it is definitely my least favourite of the Ranger's options. I just find it so dull, it's all just combat stuff. Someone explain to me what you see in this, please?

I see a bada$$ fighter with some cool spells and an epic backstory which when added to a story makes it only more legendary

I see all combat stuff and I love it XD. I don't find those combat stuff dull at all. Did someone just say "everyone loves Rangers, but all in different ways"? :)

Yes, that was the impetus for the question, so it is just the idea of being focused on being the most lethal/effective combatant you can be? It is not for me, but glad that people do like it.

Just to clarify: I get that they need to hit the Hunter for the AC bonus. ; )
That bit about the invisibility staying on for multiple attacks is a big deal, too.
I currently have multiple hunter rangers, what people overlook is stacking hunter's mark with collossus slayer
Defense fighting style with absorb elements
and as always lets not forget you have access to cure wounds.
Rangers are Better than Paladins without question.

No harm in going off the beaten path, occasionally...that’s what Ranger’s are good for, right?
Nice.

If we can't talk about how much we love the Ranger at the Ranger Bar then what's the point.
