First off let me say thanks for reading my question, hopefully some Vetted players and Dm's can weigh in and help me out with this issue.
I play a Wood Elf Rouge( lvl 5) and have dipped into the Fighter class (3 lvls) for the Battle Maneuvers as well as getting Action Surge and Second wind. My problem is that I'm not sure if my rouge would be able to pull off a move that would deal a ton of damage quickly, and before anyone says anything about power gaming, being a munchkin or anything like that please understand I'm only planning on using this tactic in a appropriately theatrical fashion. My character has taken the Archery Fighting Style and belive the +2 to Ranged weapons includes all ranged weapons, here in is my problem my plan is to throw a magic spear making it a ranged attack, and if I hit it would deal 4D6(1D6 is the weapon damage and 3D6 is my sneak attack) +3D6 Poison on a failed DC 12 Con save+2(Str Mod) i plan on using the battle maneuver Precision Attack to gain 1D8 to hit on so at the very least should the "big bad" make its save ill still have the 4d6s + 2.
This weapon has the thrown, and versatile property and I'm just wondering if it will work. This is going to be my Leonidas moment and i really hope to will work so please feel free to point out anything i have over looked.
As I understand it, making a ranged attack with a thrown weapon does not make the weapon a ranged weapon, so you wouldn’t get the +2 from Archery fighting style. It is a ranged weapon attack so you can make a sneak attack.

Correct. The archery fighting style specifically states, " You gain a +2 bonus to attack rolls you make with ranged weapons." and thrown weapons are always melee weapons that have the thrown weapon property.
Also, the text for the rogue ability sneak attack states, "The attack must use a finesse or a ranged weapon." which means it also doesn't work with a spear unfortunately.
The idea you mentioned does sound pretty cool, but isn't something that the rules for those abilities support.
Note that weapons that qualify for sneak attack, due to being ranged, are those weapons in the tables "Simple Ranged Weapons" and "Martial Ranged Weapons" - daggers (for example) can still be thrown for a sneak attack as they have the finesse weapon property.
There is something strange about sneak attack that I can’t quite remember. Maybe it’s that if you are using a finesse weapon it doesn’t matter if you use Strength or Dexterity for the ability modifier?
That's correct. The rules don't require that you use Dexterity.
Another common misconception is that you can only Sneak Attack once per round. The rules say once per turn.
please correct me if I am wrong but you are saying your turn allows one sneak attack and if you get an to attack on someone else's turn (reaction) a second sneak attack is possible.
you are not making the case for anything more than sneak/opportunity attacks, is that correct?
just wondering if you are alluding to something I am not seeing

Yes, that's basically what it means. If anything lets you do an attack on a different turn (e.g. opportunity attacks, a reaction attack from the Commander's Strike battle master maneuver, readied attacks (if you can find a way to do so and still attack on your turn), etc.), you could potentially get another Sneak Attack that round. Most of these (all the ones I can think of) use up your reaction, preventing you from getting more than 2 a round... Though a 17th-level or higher Thief gets 2 turns on the first round of combat, meaning they could get up to 4 Sneak Attacks that round (you get your reaction back at the start of your turn).
thank you, great reply that was exactly what I was curious about. I have little exposure to the battlemaster maneuvers and I had missed the thief 2 turns in round one. I couldn't see anything but opportunity attacks becoming available.
Thanks so much for the help saved me looking silly or having to have a lengthy at table discussion that would have ended in disappointment all the same. Seeing how I'm only at lvl 8 the second attack on my turn would have to come in the form if my action surge seeing how I am a multi lvl character. I'm thinking the set up of being hidden to end a previous turn( giving me advantage) making my first attack be it ranged via my bow, using my bonus action to hide and if successful then using my action surge to follow up with a second attack, the second attack would not have sneak attack but I'd at least get advantage from being hidden.
1st roll with advantage if already hidden ( possibly crit)+ sneak attack, bonus action hide, action surge, second attack w/ advantage ( possibly crit). This is less theatrical and more tactical but if it works I'll still get to play the hero all the same.
