Im new to DnD, obviously. Im playing a small group campaign with two other brothers that are pretty green with our DM brother who's been doing this for years. Its a way to stay in touch in a COVID world. Idk what all is available to me and our DM isn't forthcoming and is amused by it. I have a scout halfling lvl6 rouge. I don't know much about subclasses or any of that. I'm slowly working my way through an online beginners guid book too, fyi. Mainly looking for feedback on how I'm doing so far, so thumbs up or down and pointers are welcomed.
Proficiencies: Deception, Perception, Sleight of Hand and Stealth
Expertise: Investigation and Sleight of Hand
Accomplishments Thus Far Started off just attacking creatures in woods to understand combat, loosely. Then we made our way to Emon. While in Emon's port, successfully snuck onto a ship and discovered it was smuggling suude. Stole small amount of suude and got away. Found a underbelly tavern and used some of the suude to establish/bribe a contact to keep an ear out on rumors or secret news as well as messages. Now the party is going to Kraghammer to check on the status of Lady Kima who has gone missing. We doubled back to Emon because we didn't have entry papers and had to get those. Felt dumb for that. On the way back, was ambushed by some orcs and a troll, but we managed to win that one. While in Emon, got some vials to transfer the suude into and some cloak pins that singled they were from Kraghammer, bribed. Went back to the boat I stole suude from and lied to the captain that I killed some dwarfs trying to sell on his turf. Convinced the captain to pay me in small amounts of his suude and continue too as long as I bring proof of these "kills". DM gave me inspiration, still trying to understand that though. Planning to use the suude to pay for any more seedy deeds and maintain my contact at the tavern. We are on break now but plan to resume our quest because we got our entry papers.
I am not sure if you mean scout halfling rogue or stout halfling rogue.
Scout rogue is a subclass and if that is what you picked, you should have expertise in nature and survival. Otherwise you should research subclasses and pick one because they give you cool features.
Also you should pick a background if you haven't yet. They give you 2 additional proficiencies and other things. (Maybe pick up persuasion, based on your description of what you have done so far. It would be useful for how you are playing your character.)
At first level you pick two skills for expertise, and then you do it again at 6th level, so you should have four skill expertises at this point.
You also should have proficiency in Thieves' tools.
Inspiration just means you get to reroll a 20 once, when you want. DMs give it out, usually when someone role plays well.
Maxing dex was the way to go for rogues.
In battle, try to set up sneak attack damage. You can do this by making sure an ally is engaged with the enemy before you attack. Or by hiding, which gives you advantage on the attack if it works and the enemy can't see you.
This is just some basic advice from a relatively new player, hope this helps!

You may want to consider using two weapon fighting if you haven’t yet. It can substantially increase your likelihood of landing your sneak attack by giving you a second chance to attack.
Playing a rogue can feel really bad or ineffective when you miss your one attack without the bonus action attack option. A friend of mine decided to play a rogue fighting at range without making use of his bonus action. he ended up having such a horrible time he decided to retire the character
Thank you for your reply. You're right, I should of just said stout halfling. Right there on the player sheet. After talking with my DM he enlighten me that we already picked a subclass during set up and that I'm an original assassin. My background is criminal/spy.
My combat style has been rather simple so far. I hide, shoot arrows and hide again. Its been nice because of the sneak attack and advantage. I've asked my DM what I can do to prepare my own poison. I guess he wants it to be time consuming because I have to start researching herbalism and alchemy. I figured it would make things more interesting if I switched to two weapon fight style as well.
It's a slow campaign, we play once or twice a month because of life in general lol
