I am a Human Wild Magic Sorcerer, lvl 3. My backstory is that I am a 19 yr old Waterdhavian Noble who is trying to keep the strange magic he is discovering within himself secret from friends, family, even my squad. Well one member anyway, he’s a dumbass dragon born, while the other member saw me cast magic while the Dragonborn was unconscious, but thankfully he’s a mute gnome so he can’t exactly spill the proverbial beans. My guy is Thrilled by the power, and magic, but also scared. Sort of a metaphor for puberty. Typically in battle I have been successfully keeping my sorcerer identity hidden by casting quicken, minor illusion to create a sort of life-like backdrop 5x7 wall of the area that I dive behind, then casting fire bolt or mind sliver or something, and the Dragonborn is none the wiser. This alone is worth the price of admission, watching my buddy play out not understanding where I disappear to during combat. But I’m wondering, in the spirit of hiding in plain site, are there good multiclasses to add on from here? For a minute was thinking of adding a fighter, just so I can be of use when I am not able to hide, but not sure. my stats:
strength 10 dex 10 consti 16 int 11 wis 14 char 16 I mean, the cat will be out of the bag at some point, but I feel my character is too much in the blossoming phase to trust his secret will be received graciously. When it does happen, it will probably be in the most heroic fashion. Or as heroic as a lawful evil can get. so yeah. My question is, just go full hog wild magic sorcerer, or toss in another spice? Any thoughts?
As a wild magic sorcerer you should be getting some regular rolls on the wild magic table with effects that sort of scream uncontrolled magic is happening. So the cat should be ripping free of that bag pretty soon. Multiclassing might delay it somewhat but probably only if you were multiclassing into a spellcasting class. You might be better off taking an initiate feat at L4 to explain the magic. Given that your LE that sort of means either an evil bard or cleric or a warlock given your stats. You don’t have the stats to MC into wizard, rogue, or fighter and ranger, monk, and barbarian don’t fit your background as well as not having the stats. You are trying to use MCing to hide the magic and the only things you can MC into are magic wielders, fRankly I would just bite the bullet and stay a sorcerer and let the cat rip the bag apart.
Thank you for that reply. I like it and hear what your saying. Forgive me for only being a year into playing, but is the thinking behind “a class option not matching your stats” that, if a category is super low, worrying about it will take too many points away from where your focus should be?
So far the only time the wild magic table has hit was to materialize a life saving unicorn but the pc I was worried about seeing was unconscious from combat. I guess I’ve been lucky so far that he’s been playing so recklessly. But I hear you. At any moment I could roll on the table and everything could become clear. Was curious if MCing was gonna help hide it, but what you said makes it clear that’s a dumb idea. Also not sure how I would justify adding a class character wise, as I’m sort of going the “power thrust upon him” route, except maybe Warlock, which I’m still slightly considering. the initiate feat you speak of… that just gives me 2 extra cantrips and a lvl 1 spell, you’re suggesting staying full sorcerer and adding that feat? But if I MC’d at lvl 4 then got that feat at lvl 5 I could take those extra spots from my new MC right? Regardless of taking an MC, I am liking the idea of that feat. What about Warcaster though?
Oh rereading that feat, one of the features is I just get to pick a class and get those 3 slots?? I see. And that’s way better than wasting growth for my sorcerer on MCing a round. I think I’m starting to get it. Thanks!
First the stats - according to the rules as written (RAW) you can’t multiclass into a class that you don’t have at least 13s in the major stats for. Yes this is because without somewhat superior stats your not going to be able to play the class effectively. Following that the 10s in strength, Dex and intel rule out the rogue, fighter, monk, barbarian and ranger classes
if you’ve only hit the wild magic table once from level 1 to 3 you’ve been fairly lucky. the initiate feat was to give you a possible explanation of some spell casting ability when you are discovered rather than having to admit to being a full on caster. In your situation it would have provided an excuse as you tried to act as a different class. Yes it does also provide some additional casting ability but that is relatively minor. You can multiclass any time you move up a level but you can normally only take a feat when you get an ASI and you get the feat instead of the ASI. I think realistically your pretty much stuck being a sorcerer. You could MC into warlock but you have the stat in wisdom to MC into cleric if you pick a neutral or evil deity you could some healing, get to wear armor and fight as a back line fighter while explaining the sorcerer activities as a test of your deity or as the initiate feat you didn’t take. Eventually it will become clear that you are a sorcerer that dabbles in clerical activities.but that might give you more play room.
Oh I’m kind of liking the cleric evil deity route. Fits my backstory of being in Margaster family: hearing rumors that some of my ancestors secretly study wizardry and worship Asmodeus. thank you for explanation of stats!
And if I get caught casting I can use the excuse of studying on the sly from a book I wasn’t supposed to have taken from a fam members study… or something… until yes, eventually I fully embrace my sorcerer - tude and own it publicly
Thank you magi I meant to mention that feat. Your stats are high enough to use L4 for a feat like meta magic adept and then you can actually use the meta magic on both the sorcerer and cleric spells I believe. While being an evil cleric let’s you make great use of harm spells keep in mind that you also need to keep your party healthy so they can keep you alive so you will need to bring some healing and buffs as a cleric. (if you go that route). The nice thing in this situation is that you don’t actually have to take the initiate feat but can claim a story around the feat as an explanation of the non clerical magic. ( you were exposed to some sort of wild magic node but your deity somehow removed you/stopped you from fully entering/etc so you only got the initiate feat instead of being filled with wild magic etc. story obviously doesn’t have to be true 😉)
I like that. I was originally gonna start with subtle for metamagic but the appeal of twinned and quicken were too great. Ahhh so then I could add subtle but not waist it on leveling up down the road, right, cause you really don’t get a ton metamagic options otherwise. Good idea, thanks!
Can I, or is it wise to, use Level 4 to do MC cleric and metamagic adept feat at the same time then?
and I’m totally down to do some buffing for the team. Especially as I embrace my evil side more, I like the yin/yang of guilt tripping myself to good deeds/making my team know they can’t survive without my power.
No, either talk to your DM about making L3 the MC with a rewrite ( not actually suggested but a possibility) or waiting til L5. The problem is the ASIs and feats are based on the level IN CLASS. So you want to make L4 as a sorcerer for the feat, then get the MC with the next level. If your DM is willing to retcon the character you’re still delaying the feat till you get L4 as a sorcerer as it is. This the trick with 5e you can only do certain things at certain times so you do sort of have to have a plain.if you get the retcon you have the new class to cover what your doing. If not you get the subtle meta magic at level 4 to help cover. Either way it’s a win. Question: what is the dragonborn’s problem with you casting spells?
Great. Thank you. Well it is more about my own fear of being found out, going for the sort of Anikan Skywalker meets Prince Hal approach, unable to trust that anyone could except me for who I am. Still trying to understand what it all means. I am also looking to join or at least dabble with the Xanathar Guild, which doesn’t seem to be recommended often. Basically my god is this basic spoiled rich kid who learns of a family history of dark magic and begins having some powers in his late teens, so line super defensive foppish guy with an ok heart but pretty selfish. And the way my buddy is playing Dragonborn, it just feels fun to keep him in the dark as a side challenge. I think when he actually finds out, it may be sort of anti climactic. Except… I am certainly not altruistic like him, and am way in it for my own gains and becoming an all powerful sorcerer, where as he wants to bang bad guy heads and hug trees. So though I do not ever plan to derail our main mission, I am definitely trying to ride the rail of how can I use all of this to get super powerful and show all the mean bully’s in boarding school that I am more than a daddy’s boy.
But yeah, think I prob won’t ask to recon lvl 3 and just plan for feat lvl 4. Realistically that’s still a couple weeks away with out once a week game. I like this idea a lot. And will keep mulling over whether to add evil cleric at 5.

Another option is to grab Metamagic Adept for more sorcery points so you can use more Subtle Spells to keep the ruse up.
