It’s a full spellcaster, so it’s by no means bad—a sorcerer is still easily stronger than half the classes in the PHB except maybe paladin (but when you multiclass the two… oh boy!)
The issue is that it is by almost every metric inferior to the wizard, and I say that as a sorcerer fanboy who prefers it to the wizard class. The only 100% unique feature the sorcerer has over the wizard is metamagic, but that IMNSHO isn’t enough to equalize the two classes. Wizards have a gazillion more spells known, far greater flexibility in what spells they have available per day (Especially after the wizard fanbase de facto vetoed the Spell Versatility optional class feature sorcerers were supposed to get in Tasha’s), and a more expansive spell list in general, for starters.
Current sorcerer is... fine... but has some notable deficiencies. Too few spells known, odd gaps in their spell list (e.g. no summoning), very few exciting features outside of metamagic, and a lackluster capstone. In addition, Sorcerer has perhaps the biggest imbalance between its early subclasses (like Wild Magic, Storm, Shadow) and its more recent ones (Aberrant Mind, Clockwork, Lunar). The revamped Sorcerer debuting in the new Player's Handbook later these year is trying to fix these issues.
One of the issues is that what makes the Sorcerer awesome, metamagic, is very limited. It's meant to make you very flexible on the fly. Unfortunately, your choices are very limited so you're not that flexible after all.

Yes, it's good. Read about the class and about metamagic. I personally like the divine soul subclass since all the cleric spells are on your spell list in addition to the sorcerer spells.
Sorcerer is quite good. I've played two divine souls, and one of them was one of my favorite characters I have played. It's not perfect; it's not got a lot of spells known, but it's extremely effective at the spells it does have.

Any time an unfathomably powerful entity sweeps in and offers godlike rewards in return for just a few teensy favors, it’s a scam. Unless it’s me. I’d never lie to you, reader dearest.
If you want to play the game for role-playing, Sorcerer is okay. But if you want to be competitive with other full spellcasters, the PHB Sorcerer has some major weaknesses, most of which being lack of spell variety and signature spells, and the meta-problem of being cut from the same cloth as Wizards but with CHA instead of INT as their main stat.
Mind you, the Tasha's subclasses of Sorcerer mostly fix the power imbalance problem and are quite potent if you know what you're doing. The Xanathar's Guide subclasses are half-way between the Tasha's and the PHB in terms of power.

I think it's worth noting that the two posts that are full bloodedly defending it are both pointing to the subclass that actually dilutes the Sorcerer by making it a half Cleric.

I ran a sorcerer as my first 5E character. Started out okay, but by the time the game hit 5th-6th level the lack of spells compared to other casting classes was really starting to hurt and metamagic really wasn't picking up the slack. Tried playing an aberrant sorcerer a few years ago, but that game fell apart before I got to actually do anything.

Sorcerer is a great class, you can cast spells and upgrade your wands or staffs and can use it to your advantage to defeat your enemies easily.
Not sure what you mean by upgrading wands/staffs. No official sorcerer has this ability.

When I say that I mean by buying new staffs, sorry it didnt come out clear as I often play video games where buying new things is called upgrading
OK but that is applicable to any spellcasting class. This thread is for the pros and cons specific to Sorcerer.

I didn't say you didn't. There is no need to get defensive. I would suggest you post here to say why you think the sorcerer (specifically, not just any spellcaster) is good. Which features and abilities of the sorcerer do you find enjoyable and what makes it more enjoyable than playing a wizard or cleric, etc.

Sorcerers are full casters, which already gives them a significant edge over several classes. They are also the class with the most raw damage output, with the only debatable option to match them in that aspect being the Fighter. They are one of the most interesting classes in the game, and can be utilized to a lot of effect if you know what you're doing.
Take a comparison between a Fighter at 5th level, and a Sorcerer at the same level, for example. If the Fighter was wielding a Greataxe, or something similar, and uses Action Surge, and if they hit with all four attacks, they would be dealing 4d12+20(assuming they have a 20 in STR), for a possible maximum of 68 damage, or 46 on average. Now, if a Sorcerer twins a 3rd level Chromatic Orb, and if they hit with both attacks, they would be dealing 10d8 damage, 80 on a maximum, or 45 on average. While on average, yes, the fighter deals 1 more point of damage, the Sorcerer could use an empowered spell to reroll some damage die, and increase the total, most likely surpassing the Fighter's damage. Less attacks, less requirements, more use, they definitely deal more damage than Fighters for levels 1-10 at the very least. While at higher levels, like 20th, I can definitely see the arguments that fighters deal more damage, but I think throughout the majority of the levels, the Sorcerer has the upper hand. If you don't agree though, I can't say you're wrong.
