Yo! so i cant tell what the storm sorcerer wants to be really. all of its features want you to play up in the front lines and get hit to even use your 14th feature (not something a d6 no armor caster should want to do) but also the 6th ability it gets wants you to play frontline. The first doesnt say it outright but it doesnt really offer much in the way of getting out or movement (10ft with no OP attacks)
clerics have thor sorcs have what i thought was gonna be storm from xmen but instead i got cole macgrath from infamous in his 80s
also why is there no spell list? who did the sorcs hurt to get treated so badly?
Any pre-Tasha's sorcerer is bad because they do not know enough spells (and there is no spell list because it was produced before Tasha's). You either want a 2024 sorcerer, an Aberrant Mind, Clockwork Soul, or Lunar. The rest are just bad.
Trying to play a storm sorcerer and use their abilities will, as you mention, get you killed. It's not just bad but the worst sorcerer subclass.
I’m currently playing a Lvl 7 Human Storm. As my first full caster class! And I can’t help but feel like I made a mistake LOL. Don’t get me wrong, I’m enjoying the character so far but I feel like I’m not playing him remotely right. None of the subclasses features get used (with the exception of when the DM put us in a snowstorm I actually got to use storm guide). Granted I know squat about how to properly play casters I feel like it has some great potential if only they had given it a little bit more TLC like a spell list.
They're fine. Sorcerers have no shortage of thunder or lightning damage spells built into their spell list. By the time you unlock your subclass at 3rd level, 2024 Sorcerers have 2 more prepared spells at their disposal than 2014 Sorcerers; 2024 Wild Magic still doesn't have an expanded spell list.
Tempestuous Magic is pretty good at getting you out of bad situations, but its worth depends on how often enemies make it past the party's front lines, which in part depends on the size of your party, how many players fight in melee range, and how many monsters the DM throws at you on average.
I like the storm sorceror, but I’ll grant I often multiclass it with ranger which alleviates many of its potential problems. If, for some strange reason, your worried about having enough lightning/thunder type spells take the transmuting metamagic - now all/most of your spells are on theme..
Seems to me that Storm Sorc is the Sorcerer built for multi-classing. Pick up a few levels in Hexblade Warlock or Paladin to retain spell slots. Use the armor or Invocation provided by that class for increased endurance. This is the build for playing "chicken" with the opponents. Dare them to get close, then fry or sonic force them, before flying away. Not tanky by any means, but useful sometimes to get another PC out of a jam or to trick enemies into getting out of formation to get at you, the "weak spellcaster."

Yes the Storm Sorcerer is bad for two reasons:
One of the worse in the game. Draconic is good as a pre-tasha's...but Storm is a stinker.
Look up the sorcerer subclass guide by RPGbot. He explains why it is bad.
