I recently started playing adventure league, and my character is leveled up to level 3. For my second level spell I was planning on taking suggestion, but I'm not sure how useful it will be later on in Descent into Avernus. I don't know how much longer we will stay in Baldur's Gate, and it would kinda suck if I take a spell that I can't use later on (my character can't speak abyssal or fiendish). Should I still take it, or choose something else?
What spells and meta-magic do you currently have? I'm asking because while I'm not a fan of suggestion it can be twinned well. Doubt i does squat down under though.
I have sacred flame, thaumaturgy, guidance, toll the dead, mage armor, guiding bolt and sleep (I'm a divine soul sorcerer). As metamagic I planned on taking twinned and subtle.
I'm a divine soul sorcerer in a different campaign setting so I don't know if Suggestion will work for you, but I have found it to be very useful. It's one of my favorite spells. Once I suggested switching it out for another spell and my entire party thought it was a bad idea. It is very DM dependent though. Your DM gets to decide if the suggestion is reasonable. If your DM allows the new UA spell variant rule, you could take it and if you hate it, you can switch it out after a long rest.
I think you need to strongly consider adding shield to your spell list. I don't think I'd touch suggestion. Since it's an ADL game, I'd also strongly consider Healing Word. I'd also consider making my divine source "Law" to pick up bless, it's a fantastic buff spell that will really help your party.

Its about that level one loses Sleep (:)) and agree with crzyhawk, Shield and actually Absorb Elements are must takes for Sorcerer. Enhance Abilities and Invisibility are also I nice spells to twin
To answer your original question, for your second level spell, I'd go with Misty Step, no question. Being able to get out of jail free is a huge, huge deal when some monster gets in your face.

Take the suggestion spell if you like now. You can always switch it for something else later on when you level up.

Don't forget to also swap out your Sleep spell soon, when you do, you can trade it in for a higher level spell as well.
