So I've been playing with the idea of a shadowblade using rogue-like sorceror a lot... So we're probably talking pure sorc levels but playing him like a rogue... So focusing on dex and charisma.
Been going through various races based around the idea that he's a manic collector of sorts, first idea was a Kenku wearing a cloak made from various religious and faction banners with a ton of different coins and trinkets sown onto it... But i quickly realised that roleplaying a kenku might get old after a lil while. Then I went through kobold and goblin none of which hit the right itch quite right.
So right now I've landed on Tabaxi, seems like a strong choice... Good abilities and great stats.
Now... The optimal origin for a melee sorc seems to be pretty obvious, the draconic... Not only do I get "free mage armor" I also get a lil extra health and a neat charisma damage boost to green flame blade...
What I can't harmonise in my mind is having my illusion based sneaky cat mage using a fire dragon themed origin... just seems off...
If I keep my character decked out in various religious symbols divine soul would fit very well, I just can't find the mechanical justification. As a sorceror I'd already be short on spell so adding the cleric spell list wont give me a huge benefit. I was thinking taking spiritual weapon and reflavoring it as sort of dual wielding shadow blades which is kinda cool... Only a spiritual weapon can only move 20 ft per turn and tabaxi are fairly mobile, so It'd quickly become a little weird.
Then we have shadow... Seems obvious, sneaky and shadowy.. But what do I actually gain? Darkness is concetration so can't be combo'd with shadowblade, I already have dark vision as a tabaxi and the hound of ill omen is made to synergise with saving throws and not melee attacks...
You could tweak Draconic origin to be a Shadow Dragon, give you necrotic damage type and resistance to necrotic at level 6 for elemental affinity and then have the character believe (for right ot wrong) that their collecting of religious iconography helps protect them from a shadow dragon. Maybe have a quirk where he/she thinks the shadow dragon is imprisoned in their own shadow and they alwasy need at least one religious icon or it will get free.

I like the idea of using imagery to protect him self... he won't be the brightest guy so just grabbing whatever symbols people seem to find important is kinda cool.
Necrotic don't syngergise with greenflame blade or booming blade which you'll be relying upon for melee so it's not super viable.. unless of course I reflavor one of those aswell
if you are looking at shadow bblade (psychic damage) combining with green flame or booming blade (fire or thunder) you will have to give up some synergy with regard to your abilities.
Shadow Dragon is something you add onto another dragon type so you could go Shadow Red Dragona and retain fire as the damage type then go Green Flame Blade (maybe a cosmetic effect of having it look like black shadow flames).
Or
If DM is willing you might be able to do a Shadow Deep Dragon. Deep Dragons have not been put into 5e yet (I could be wrong) but are underdark based and have a mind effecting breath weapon so you might be able to blag psychic as a damage type.

Instead of being a "tabaxi dragon sorcerer" why not fluff yourself into a "half-rakshasa" or something similar? Mechanically you're still a tabaxi dragon sorcerer, but story wise, you're the product of a rakshasa who tried to "play with his food" but it escaped.

Any time an unfathomably powerful entity sweeps in and offers godlike rewards in return for just a few teensy favors, it’s a scam. Unless it’s me. I’d never lie to you, reader dearest.

Ohh I like htat idea, you mght need a way to get advantage on spell saving throws though just to flesh out the rakshasa-ness.
Spell wise Rakshasa have: detect thoughts, disguise self, mage hand, minor illusion, charm person, detect magic, invisibility, major image, suggestion, dominate person, jly, plane shift, true seeing which are all on the Sorcerer list if you wanted to mimic the spell side of things as well.

Had to look the Rakshasa up, but that's a pretty good idea :)
I kinda settled on on going back to kobold to better embrace the "dragon" theme I guess... At the moment I'm thinking a scrawny kobold called something "the 27th".. Basically he'd be kinda of a shaman type character for a kobold tribe serving a dragon... So why is he the "27th" of his name? Well dragons tend to have a bad temper so whenever this dragon had a bad day he'd end up killing his lowly kobold shaman, and the name and title would pass onto a newly hatched kobold bearing some kind of chosen mark...
So my character would've eventually caught on to his fate and being a rare chaotic kobold who values his own skin over obeying his great dragon lord, he escaped the dragon's den to go on and find his own fortune..
Now this guy is forever afraid of being fried by a dragon's breath... which he won't see coming because he can't see anything when looking up due to sunlight sensivity... Which is why he's always stealing various symbols of power and value hoping they might rub off on him and protect him from his former master.
This way it makes sense that my character is mostly focused on spells used for escaping and hiding because he's incredibly paranoid, and even serving as the tribe's shaman he'd be constantly dodging the dragon's wrath... It also allows me to embrace the fiery aspect of my bloodline...
