Since returning to DnD from a 20 year absence, Sorcerer is one of the last classes for which I have tried. My last experience with such was last under 3.5 rules when metamagic generally required upcasting.
As I understand such in 5E, I have a number of sorc points and applying metamagic costs those points, and nothing else, correct? For example, does twinning a spell use two slots of the same level or just the one? Does burning 2 or more points cost anything other than those points?
Twinning a spell uses the same number of sorcery points as the level of the spell so cantrips and first level spells cost 1 SP. If you were to twin a 4th level spell it would cost 4 sorcery points. Twinning a spell doesn't cost extra spell slots. That is, if you twin a spell you don't mark off two spell slots - just one. You have used metamagic to -in a sense - create an extra spell without using a spell slot (I know that's not a great analogy but its how I think of it).
Most other metamagics have a specific SP cost - Heighten costs 3 points to use on a spell, Quicken 2 and Subtle 1 for example. You also can burn points to create spell slots - It costs 2 points to create a list level spell, 3 for a 2nd, etc.
Yes metamagic only costs sorcery points, no changes to the spell slot consumed. The main rules to remember are: only one metamagic per spell and you can only cast one leveled spell per turn (not counting reactions.) So if you quicken a spell (or cast a spell that normally only takes a bonus to cast) only a cantrip with your standard.

Just some correction/clarity:
You may cast as many levelled spells as you want during your turn if you have the actions/reactions to do so - as such if you had access to Action Surge or something similar. There is one specific exception: if you cast a spell of any level using your bonus action then all other spells of that turn must be cantrips, including any reaction-spells you make if made before the end of that turn (although most reactions occur after your turn anyway).
Also, the metamagic option "Empowered Spell" can be applied once to a spell even if you have already used another metamagic option for that spell.

Others have already accurately covered how metamagics interact with Sorcery Points, so my advice beyond this would be to also check out the Sorcerer’s Font of Magic ability - as an alternative use, you’re able to turn your sorcery points into spell slots and vice versa.
