I am working on a homebrew subclass for warlocks. The concept is that the patron is a powerful being, but is still a mortal. I am not sure what sort of features I should add for it. This is also my first time making a homebrew subclass, so I don't really know how to do all of the mechanical things. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm a blank for ideas, but I've made a couple subclasses, so I can help with the mechanical stuff.

All stars fade. Some stars forever fall. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Homebrew (Mostly Outdated):Magic Items,Monsters,Spells,Subclasses ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If there was no light, people wouldn't fear the dark.
I'd start with who is the patron? Are they an old but powerful lvl 20 Wizard siphoning off their arcane power into lesser mortals as their frail form is no longer capable of containing it? Are they someone cursed with unending life, having lived for centuries or perhaps millenia and they are taking on students and passing on some of their spell casting knowledge with a view to finding a way to end the curse? (to reference Magic the Gathering) Are they a Planeswalker from a different dimension, moving from plane to plane and igniting the "spark" in other people?
Once you have decided on that bit then you just need to create a suitable expanded spell list and either assign an existing set of abilities form the normal warlock patrons or classes or come up with some that make sense but try not to do something better than an existing class (I fall into that trap a lot).
Abilities : lvl 1: Arcane Deflection (as per War Wizard). lvl 6: Conjure Mephit (Functions in a similar way to Hexblade Accursed Spectre but summons a mephit and doesn;t require a body). lvl 10: Durable Magic & lvl 14: Deflecting Shroud (both as per war wizard).
Maybe it’s a powerful somebody who got themselves badly trapped on the ethereal plane, as an inanimate object; so they can’t free themselves with their own magic, but can communicate in limited fashion through dreams or something, and can channel power through the weave.
Oh, or if you want an antagonist in the background, maybe the patron was trapped there by a wish spell from a former protege, to extort power in exchange for freeing him, but he’s decided to sponsor a warlock instead. So that evil-wishy wizard may come after you at some point for the power he’d think you “stole”.

So a level 20 Wizard may look like the following:
Expanded spell list: lvl 1: Magic Missile, Shield. lvl 2: Magic Weapon, See invisibility. lvl 3: Fireball, Magic CIrcle. lvl 4: Arcane Eye, Polymorph. lvl 5: Legend Lore, Wall of Force.
