The war mage is all about going 1st in a battle then getting safe far away. Or dodging. They are like cow boys that quick fire. A very good alternative to the divinor subclass for a crowd control wizard.
A ninth level war mage with alert can have a plus 12 or 13 to intive then cast wall of force before anyone else. This is a great wizard to take level through 20. Not the best but one of the better ones.
I wouldn’t specialize in War Magic as a single class, but it is absolutely incredible as a two-level dip for a primary melee character, especially a psi warrior or eldritch knight. My current character is Psi Warrior 7/War Magic 2. I have mediocre Dex, so getting to add Int to initiative was a huge boost. And since my combat spellcasting is mostly limited to Shield, Absorb Elements, and ranged cantrips anyway, Arcane Deflection has zero downside. It shores up my weaker Dex, Wis, and Cha saves, and occasionally lets me save a spell slot on Shield.
