So I had a thought of making Rimuru Tempest as a character, using the changling race, the sage background, and for the classes I was thinking druid, wizard, and also artificer and I wanted to get some opinions on the build.
You'll never capture most of the character in 5e, it just doesn't work. Rimuru is a shapeshifting slime who is basically immune to physical damage, can eat any enemy, and a variety of other things. Druid and Wizard might make some sense to explain his character with just enough artificer to grab battle smith, but I don't actually imagine the character would be very good.

most anime characters DO NOT translate into D&D characters.
even the ones, (cough goblin slayer cough) based off of their d&d characters to begin with. As with most anime protagonists, they have to superhumanly evolve in ways that D&D can’t capture.
if you look at goblin slayer as the best example (which it might be), he’s a ranger, he’s a hunter ranger. His favored enemies are humanoids. Goblins and hob goblins. He is proficient in history, survival, perception, nature, investigation and arcana.
Here’s the kicker... he’s also rogue. Thief. Stealth proficient. And expertise into stealth and survival.
that puts him as a level 13 thief. And a level 7 hunter. Horde breaker And steel will from hunter.
but. That’s the max level in D&D. And if you notice... he’s clearly not max level for his anime world.
things just don’t translate from anime to D&D. You’ll only be disappointed or annoying to others, when you try and force an anime char into a D&D build. From my experiences.
True. I always think though if I can at least close to the character as I can I'm good. With the help of spell and even some magical item for characters to get later in the game you could get really close to how a character is in the anime.
I though of naofumi from the rising of the shield hero and found that even a shield of expression can get you close to it and with the help of a ruby of the war mage you could use the shield as an arcane focus.
As for rimuru if you would give him the spells absorb elements and blade, it does give him some of his resistances.
thenshows where the chars are super specialized...
(fairy Tail)
it’d be most likely.
as natsu (for example) is a human, Draconic origin, strength based sorcerer. With elemental adept, etc.
so it’s not IMPOSSIBLE.
but it’s def not easy either. And still hard to translate: ex- still Natsu. How do you give him disadvantage for land and sea vehicles. And force exhaustion/con saves for them?
the scroll limitation though is only a thing in 5e, older editions had a check for it but it wasn't class limited like it is now (Honestly one of the gripes I have with 5e and typically houserule ways to do it otherwise). As far as building anime characters you will never pull off a one for one version of it, but you can capture aspects of them. Rimuru having shapeshifting and sword fighting? Combine druid and kensei monk and you can get pretty close to it. Want to play a Jojos character with a stand? We also have that. Naofumi is just some sort of mix of paladin cleric with a focus on shield and tanking for people. It really just depends but you can at least capture some aspect of the character.
Oh for sure. Naofumi I thought was kind of easy to say the least when it came to it. Like i said with a shield of expressions and a ruby of the war mage you have his shield at least set. Just ask a dm to have the shield look like his and have the power of it just change its appearance. With him as well I though wizard was a good class for him then just give him a spellshard instead of a spellbook and you can kinda get his ability to absorb materials except you absorb spell instead.
It's also the same thing with rimuru. The changeling and druid give you you shape changing abilities but once you get up to the point were you get polymorph you good. Even some extra spells like blade ward, absorb elements, protection from energy, protection from poison can give you at least resistance to most of the damages he is immune to. Also you can grab web, mage armor, fly and a few other spells to copy some skills he has learned.
I even made a way to play ainz ooal gown from Overlord with using oathbreak Paladin and necromancy wizard and Koro Sensei from Assassination Classroom as a monk/rogue
personally. The paladin tenets wouldn’t do for Naofumi in my mind.
i see some of the bloodhunter stuff and artifcer stuffs being a better fit for Naofumi. As it fits not just mechanically. But also with his personality and etc.
Back to your Rimuru.
i would write the backstory up, as you used to be some other thing (not your race) maybe a gelatinous cube? take your pick. But some wizard True Polymorphed you into (race you pick) to amuse themselves.

I never thought of the blood hunter for naofumi. That is a good idea. I also like the idea for rimuru's backstory.
most importantly: I hope your character is as fun or more than you hoped.
Oh for sure. I also thought of the artificer class for naofumi because of their infusions and the artillery subclass works great with the flamethrower
Yeah. I dunno. To me... paladin tenets seem a deal breaker. And mechanically a lot of his shield stuff can be done with bloodhunter and his “protection” stuff he does with the shield can easily be done with things like shield master feat and the fighting style that allows you to use your shield to protect nearby allies.
🤷🏼♂️ I forget the other thread this actually came up, but I make some example bloodhunter stuff in there too.

Ok. Hey what subclass for bloodhunter would you go with
Alright I like the profane soul. I was also thinking for naofumi of going into wizard as well. For the simple reason that the spells wall of force and resilient sphere work really well for the air strike shield and shield prison. Even Bigby's hand can act as the iron maiden and the blood sacrifice.

I don't agree with this, sure by following the normal rules and guidelines laid out for you you're probably not gonna be able to. BUTT if u dont mind writing you can could totally homebrew the LIVING SHIT out of this character and get close enough

The best for being a wizard is they can regain spells slots each 4 hours they spend doing a short rest......
The worst for being a wizard is, D&D devs didn't gave to that class the opportunity to become a demiGOD at lvl 20.....
Ohhh wait, the Paladins can ????
My Ready-to-rock&roll chars:
Dertinus Tristany // Amilcar Barca // Vicenç Sacrarius // Oriol Deulofeu // Grovtuk
Agreed.
i have a feeling in the next iteration of D&D.
paladins will be over-nerfed. (Like what happened to monks) as a knee jerk reaction.

I think I found a good build for naofumi going with 6 levels of bloodhunter, 5 levels of artificer, and 9 in wizard.
