I know people love and swear by Roll20 or Fantasy Grounds, I really do not like either of them. I love D&D Beyond, it is just so clean and fresh and convenient, and I especially love the new dice and rolling feature and being able to see my party's rolls.
I would die for a VTT tied to D&D Beyond. Like, my ideal dream would be to be able to buy the source book and have a VTT with all the maps/encounters all pre-created and ready to roll. I'd even be more than willing to pay extra, like in addition to the source book buy the DM VTT Addon Pack or something that has all the maps with dynamic lighting and all the encounters and monster tokens ready to go. And hell, with the resources of Wizards of the Coast behind it we could be looking at some really polished stuff, like 3D and even animated maps maybe?
That said, I backed the Dungeon Alchemist Kickstarter and am excited to use that, so if D&D beyond ever did do a VTT, I'd love Dungeon Alchemist integration. They're already working on integrated with Roll20 and such.
Anyway... just a dream of mine I thought I'd share.
Thank you for sharing your dream/interests. I know that DDB staff pay attention to such things.
They are planning to create a virtual game space, including maps and the like. The encounter builder, combat tracker, and digital dice are all part of that. But the “VTT” elements are likely a year or more away.
There is a third party, unsupported VTT Chrome extension called AboveVTT that integrates with DDB now.
Also, just to clarify, given your “the resources of Wizards of the Coast” comment. DDB is not owned by WOTC. It is a completely separate company that has a license from WOTC.
I would love for D&D beyond to add a VTT feature.
