1) It would be really helpful to have a total container weight, summing up the weight of all the contents and the container.
2) Having a toggle that essentially lets you ignore the container weight from your encumbrance weight calculation. For those using encumbrance rules, this could be a quick way of "dropping your backpack" at the start of a combat so your speed is no longer reduced. Alternatively, this option would allow you to create a custom container for a pack animal or offsite inventory you want to keep track of but not have it add to your encumbrance weight.
The project manager for the team responsible for containers has said that one of the features he really wants to see is “drop your rucksack”; he also wants to be able to “get rid of the mule character.” (Some parties have created a dummy “mule” character for those things carried on a pack animal or for party inventory. So #2 at least is already on their radar. That said, thanks for raising it, as it is always helpful for them to know how many people are interested in those kinds of features.
count me in for someone who would like to see a weight reduction for things like bag of holding on overall encumbrance on my character sheet. It sucks seeing 300LB encumbrance when the only thing I'm carrying other than the bag is a shield and a weapon.
Just found a little feature with editing containers. You can override the weight of containers to be a negative number. So for the purposes of quick reduction of weight you can simply enter the weight of everything as a negative value. And for a quick reminder, just keep the total weight as a note.
EXAMPLE. you have 88 lbs of gear contained within a Bag of Holding, override the BoH's weight to be -73. This will reduce the weight carried by everything except the weight of the bag.
Not the prettiest way to solve this issue, but a good one for the foreseeable.
@ArwensDaughter Glad it is on the radar. In a game I'm playing we've got two dummy "mule" sheets. Well, to be fair one actually is a mule that the group shares and the other is my steel defender. We are playing the variant encumbrance rules so it is pretty amazing how quickly the weight adds up to the first threshold, which drops your speed. Having the weight not count is nice, but it still won't solve the shared space problem.
@DLtheDM Yeah, I saw that trick and its one of the reasons I put the suggestion out for having the weight added up. It seems like it should be trivial to have it calculate and display so you can do the weight modification. Though I really hope that isn't the final solution because it also doesn't seem that difficult to truncate the weight for a BoH either.
I noticed there is a feature to place items in other items (backpack, etc.), but scroll/map case won't hold parchment... Can this be changed to allow cases to hold parchment (and maybe other items)?

There isn't really anything I notice that is different between one of my homebrew creations and a bag of holding that would signify why the BoH would count as a container, and not mine. The only thing I've seen that is worthy of difference between a BoH and a regular magic item, is that a BoH is tagged with "container" and "utility", something I've tagged mine with as well, without it actually popping up in inventory as a container.
I think they need some non-traditional container types too. That you don't really carry at all...
Like:
- House
- Demiplane
etc...
all with Zero weight..
Yes. I think a good mundane example of this would be saddle bags that carry things for you, but don't encumber you (just your mount) or a chest that you can keep on the wagon the hirelings are manning.

There is a work around that will allow you to create any type of container. Just pick something that is already a container, say a backpack. When you click the item in your inventory (I'll describe it like clicking a section header for the container) the item's pop out info window will show up. That's where you can customize the name and weight. It's not really an ideal solution because it keeps the original item's description. And if you add new items into it, you'd have to manually adjust the weight to the negative to offset it all so it reads as zero (or whatever weight you want).
So the first of my suggestions at the start of the thread would at least add it up quickly to allow you to customize the weight quicker. However, the second would simply allow you to ignore the weight on your character's encumbrance. I suppose I would add a third request to include custom containers so you can describe them however you want and they show up and behave as a container should.

You can always change the name of the container. Select something that weighs 0lbs like an Alms Box, then Customize the item and call it "Demiplane" or whatever. I did this for a sidekick and named the Alms Box "Droops Gear" it has worked really well. I named his dagger "Droops Dagger" and customized the weight to Zero. This is because on the App you can't see containers yet so the dagger looks like it belongs to the PC even though it's in the container.
