The Sanguine set was a reward for people who preordered content and was delivered as a preorder bonus. By simply giving them away at a later date it's a little insulting to the people who prepaid for them to begin with, under the assumption that it was a limited set.
A better giveaway would be for a new set of limited edition dice that are released for Halloween, but then go on sale in the store later. This would then reward those who were part of the original giveaway without reducing the value of their purchases.
You could even make it a regular trend where you release a slightly updated set as a giveaway for 1 week around the holiday, then sell it as a limited edition dice set for a year, and then remove it from the store to make it more limited and reward the long-term subscribers to DDB.
Many of us who play D&D are inherently collectors of things (dice, minis, books, etc) and having unique or limited digital items would also contribute to retention of subscribers.
I hate to tell you, but much like NFTs, our digital dice don't have any value to lose.
Most of the dice and character sheet frames and themes are made as preorder bonuses first, and they are all eligible to be a subscriber perk or holiday giveaway later.
The only things not likely to be given away for free are the things that cost money. You can't complain about something you got for free being given away for free.
Not the first time pre-order incentives were used in a later promotion or reward. I think that's a good thing.
I agree. I always buy on pre-order to make sure I get the vanity items because I like that kind of thing. I am not bothered that DDB is using cool dice for those who may not have been able to buy during pre-order. It is all about providing an enjoyable play experience. I do not think it was even implied that the sanguine dice would only ever be offered during the pre-order.
