The whole reason I started an AL character was to have a character I could play location to location if I found myself having to do that. From what I’ve gathered from S9 just killed every incentive to keep playing it. Don’t want to play out anymore of what’s left of S8. This absolutely killed it for me and anymore of my money going towards any official DnD products.
My main location I play at has an open play system and it’s so much less bureaucratic garbage in general and the fan base is amazing and it’s world has taken off all on its own. There have been elections for city officials and when we aren’t in game, we are our character while at the store (local pub) and we can pay/trade each other for services, can work together with buying plots of land, starting businesses and everything and it is soooo much more fun than AL ever was. AL was just an “official” back up character should I ever need it because it’s sooooo “official” I can bounce adventures and locatations with it... oh wait nevermind! Sorry wotc, any money invested in this game I can spend in the DriveThruRPG. I would much rather spend my money to people who deserve it than a dirtbag company restricting play in a FANTASY table top RPG where I have to play what they tell me I have to play in order to get anything out of it!
They just killed the whole idea of the greatest game ever. Except they didn’t because no one has to play AL. I can’t wair to see this hurt wotc’s pockets more than it puts money in them. Every thread I’ve already read about S9 changes is nothing but absolute dislike for it, and for all the right reasons.
Also all the shops that people play AL at that are going to take a hit in business and lose money just so wotc can try and force people into giving them more money. They should be ashamed of themselves for even thinking up of this bs.
Forcing every game and character out there currently in progress that people are having fun with and don’t want to stop playing to have to quit and start over... soooo many tiers of bs.
Appreciate the links! And I apologize if it came off I did, or if it came off that I came down at DnDB, I know you guys aren’t wotc. Going to copy, edit and paste this to their forums.
Anyone else think this is such a low move to pull by wotc as I do?
No idea. I haven't played AL, just with friends. Some homebrew, some printed adventures. Either way, D&D 5e is fun, and I intend to keep supporting 5e products.
No really, it's a minor change for a style of D&D play that isn't the target demographic. AL is really designed as a bandaid, a patch for those who can't find a permanent group. These changes are not that massive and are designed to discourage item hunting across campaigns, which is a style of D&D play that really isn't conducive to the goals of the game in general.
This isn't going to be the death knell of D&D, because you're assuming most people who play D&D are AL players who treat it more like a video game. That is really not the case.
