I have been delving heavily into homebrewing lately and have found what is potentially a lack in capability in the homebrew features of D&DBeyond. If there is a way to do what I will describe and I simply haven't discovered it yet, please help me by letting me know. If these features truly are lacking but are in development, I would be honored by being able to support this development in any way I can.
*Preface* - I am actually serious about doing this. I am not creating this thread to complain or cry, but instead to ask for help in making my vision real. D&DBeyond may stand on the foundations of official, licensed D&D content, but they have made legitimate attempts at aiding homebrew creation with their platform. I perceive that they actually mean to nurture this integral part to the gaming experience, and if that is true, then I would like to honor that intent by leveraging these features to create some homebrew content that I am quite proud of and I think I and many others will enjoy. Thank you for your consideration, in advance.
Goal - Create two bonus action abilities for my homebrew subclass. Give one of them a number of charges similar to Rage and Wild Shape. Make both bonus action abilities represented in the in the Actions > All and Actions > Bonus Action screen of a D&DBeyond character sheet with a number of checkboxes beside it to track usage between rests. Make one of these abilities reset it's charges in the Actions > All section when the character takes a short or long rest. Make the charges for these abilities able to be increased with levels.
Trying to do this myself, I have looked at the homebrew Feat, Spell, Weapon and Subclass options and have not found a way to do this.
Using the homebrew Feat creator
Using this would force the player to forgo a Feat or API in order to inherit their subclass feature
I cannot give the character a bonus of "negates enemy advantage on attacks made within area of effect"
I cannot find a way to choose a number of charges to apply to the ability, similar to choosing to cast a spell at a higher level for numerically increased damage
I cannot grant the character a resource pool similar to superiority dice (granted limited number based on class level) which appears as a selectable resource like charges to a rage or wild shape
Using the homebrew Spell creator
This feature does not grant me the option to place it in the Actions > All screen as it is not an attack spell. The abilities I want to place there are cast on self and are buff abilities, and so do not show under the attack screen.
This ability belongs to a homebrew magic school and so is not found in the list of schools of magic in the Spell creator page. This means that I would have to create a magic spell of one of the official magic schools in order to create a spell that belongs to a homebrew school of magic (which is related to all, but different from all). This is an obvious work-around, but it doesn't seem to me (as uninformed as I am in how D&DBeyond, as a platform, is built) to be impossible to allow a person to create a homebrew magic school and make that creation of mine to be available for selection in the list of schools of magic in the homebrew spell creation process. And selecting a magic school for the spell, is required, so I am forced to take the proverbial black eye in order to make the closest realization possible of what I want to create.
Related - I cannot create a school of magic to be selected by a spell when creating a homebrew spell within that homebrew school.
Using the homebrew Subclass creator
I cannot grant the character an interactive resource pool by which they can actively manage their available resources used in combat abilities (similar to superiority dice).
In closing, I want to reiterate, if there is a way to do what I have described and I simply haven't discovered it yet, please help me by letting me know. If these features truly are lacking but are in development, I would be honored by being able to support this development in any way I can. Thank you.
You’re not adding “charges,” you need to ad “limited use data.” When you create an action (as part of a racial trait, subclass feature, or feat) you need to first set a “reset type” (short rest, long rest, etc.) to establish the workflow, and then save the action. After that you need to edit that newly created action and scroll all the way to the bottom where they will see new field(s): “limited use data,” (and level scaling). The limited uses can get set there.
For the dice (like the superiority dice you mentioned a couple of times) are set up using one action. It uses “limited uses” to represent the numbers of dice, and snippets to represent how they appear in the text on the character sheet. The “limited uses” I already explained, the snippets you can learn about here (and ask questions too):
So first a feat, subclass feature, or racial trait gets created. Then the “action” gets created attached to that feature/trait/feat. Then the action gets edited to add the limited use data, and you add the snippets in the snippet fields. After you create, delete, or edit such an action, you MUST then re-save the entire Homebrew using the main [SAVE CHANGES] button under Basic Information.
As for “negates enemy advantage,” that will have to be in plain txt because at this point, nothing really actually “targets” anything, so we still have to remember some things.
Spells don’t add Actions. But you can “customize” any spell directly on the character sheet and select “display as attack” and it will along with the actual attack spells.
Magic Items don’t add actions yet.
As for using a feat, feats can be added directly to a character sheet under Features & Traits->Feats: Manage Feats. (That’s specifically so DMs can do stuff like this for their players.)
Ik this is old but how do I make this action im making appear into the bonus action tab in actions with 1 charge and how do I make it appear at the 5th level?
OH I SEE MY MISTAKE!! I made the action via "Option" Instead of "Action". I tried making it an option then action via option. Thats so dumb of me lol, thanks for the help Sposta!! You've been great help and yes it is for the Gem dragonborn ^^
Im new to Homebrew, Im making a new Race and wanted to allow the character to use a bonus action to use its claws and or Fangs to attack. Of course the amount of attacks will scale in 5lvl intervals. I got the 1st set up as its just one attack on level 1. I want to add additional attack at level 5 by level 10 it will be 3 attacks which will be a maximum.
However when I want to create a bonus action with 2 attacks per turn at a higher level im getting kind of confused on how to make it. I figured how to ad all parameters apart from how many attacks you get. I thought about adding a D6 every 5 levels but that would mean only one attack roll which could make this OP which I do not want. How do I set up Multiple Bonus action attacks, I want it to work kind of like Flurry of Blows that monks use.
Should I set up the parameters for the attacks and just Inform the Player on th amount of attacks he gets in Snippets and Discription? I dont feel like thats the solution
i know this is a old page but is there anyway to make a item that auto deletes its self when used/ rolls dice or rolls damage based on the amount of charges used i have a pc i am playing and uses a a lot of Resorces so it would make it easier to manage if i could automate some of it

No, temporary, modal, and automatic stuff like that is not possible.

This is the sort of thing I was hoping to receive. Thank you.

As for the level, simply designate that level for the feature/trait. Is this for a subclass feature or a racial trait? Is this for your Dragonborn?
As for the charge, Actions don’t have “Charges,” they have “Limited Uses.” Please see the Subclasses & Races FAQ #4: (https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/dungeons-dragons-discussion/homebrew-house-rules/131411-a-homebrewers-how-to-faq).

Oh, I forgot, to have it display as a bonus action, you have to select that as the “activation type.”

is there a way to make it do an effect like immunity and disadvantage for a period of time? also sorry for saying this when the post is old
No, temporary effects are not currently supported by DDB. You can take it with a magic item that can be equipped/unequipped. Correct, the number of attacks would be handled with Description and a Snippet.
