Don't know if this is the right place to report this. But I've now run the same encounter twice-- adding ad hoc NPC's the initiative, running through multiple turns, recording damage, etc. Both times I when I went to resume the encounter, nearly all the changes had been lost. It was back on Round 1 Turn 1, no hit point changes, no ad hoc NPC. Just gone. Last night, I even hit the 'Save Encounter' button after setting everything up-- although my understanding is that the saves are supposed to happen automatically.
Very frustrating. Though, it's alpha, so I'll just chalk it up to helping find bugs.
Let me know if there is a better place to report this.
It's saving for me, so I can't reproduce the issue. However, standard questions for problems: Are you running any browser extensions (especially, but not limited to, Beyond20 and/or Above VTT)? A VPN? Ad Blocker?
Not running any of those extensions or on VPN. And none that interact with the site. (I've got one Dark Mode extension I use only google docs). Running on Chrome.
I seem to have identified a pattern. The save seems to fail whenever I add a manual entry to the combat. Tried it a couple of times. Saves fail after I've added the new combatant.
Just wanted to report that this is still happening even after the update to v0.2.22. Works fine if I don't do any manual entries. But if I add any manual entries, it simply stops saving. I'll admit it was pretty frustrating yesterday evening. Party has an NPC who I'm entering that way (ad hoc character for whom I haven't bothered to create a custom monster). Obviously that's a workaround, but here's hoping it gets fixed properly!
Same is still Happening years later. I've added several manual entries that won't save and are lost.
Umm....saving status of the Combat Tracker has only been possible since July or August of this year, so it's hardly "years later." Maybe you mistook adas' join date for the posting date?
Also, to be clear, are you having trouble saving the encounter to run later, or are you having trouble with the state of the combat tracker saving after beginning the encounter?
Wow, resurrecting this thread as this is still a problem. To be clear, the issues is, adding combatants using manual entry disables the ability to resume an encounter. I use the dndbeyond encounter builder for every game I run. It is a fantastic tool and works well with beyond20/roll20, but it does have a few limitations and quirks.
To repeat, build encounter (what monsters, what characters doesn't matter)
Run Encounter
Start
Next (a few times to progress the round/turn)
Hit the ellipses next to the Game Log button and Restart will appear (may take a moment)
Hit MY ENCOUNTERS > [Name of encounter] (or close the window/ tab and reopen)
Instead of Run Encounter, you will see Resume Encounter
Hitting Resume Encounter picks up where you left off. Any damage, initiative counts, round and turn are where you left off.
Now, repeat the process (using ellipses->Restart), only after step 1, select manual entry and enter a combatant. At this point, the encounter will not save and cannot be resumed.
I have been struggling a bit with how to handle dynamic entry into an ongoing encounter, where combatants arrive in later rounds. Manual entry works very well, especially for unpredictable entries like Conjure spells, but it breaks the ability to resume the encounter.
Workaround -
If you use manual entry (for reasons listed above or other reasons), and you need to save an encounter, to pick up at a later date, this is the only way I've found of doing this. It's a good idea to hit Next one last time so you know who is up next for your next session. I then screenshot the encounter (you may need more than one if the scrollbar is present), then save that off somewhere. Just before your next game session, pull up the encounter and the screenshot and hit Run Encounter (there will be no resume) and re-add your manual entry creatures. Manually update initiative counts from the screenshot, then hit Start. Hit the Next button until you reach the round and turn you left off at on the screenshot. Update hit points for NPCs (the player character hit points should come from the character sheet). Kind of a pain, but at least it can be done.
Also, if you are using manual entry for combatants or for whatever reason have NPCs that may appear in a subsequent combat, keep that encounter window open until you are ready to run the next encounter, so you can track current hit points for those NPCs.
April 2024, still happening. [Edit to add more info] I noticed that after using the "Manual Entry" tool to add more monsters, anytime I make a change to the encounter (such as taking/adding HP), the encounter tries to autosave; the "saving" icon appears underneath the title of the combat. But when it's done saving, it says, "Last save was yesterday," (or whenever I first created the encounter). I'm not a programmer and don't know much about coding; but it seems like manually entering a monster somehow interrupts the autosaving feature. It's trying to save, but can't do it.
I have an extensive battle coming up and I was planning on just manually adding the custom monsters to the initiative, but I am unable to save the encounter when I do so. I think I might just use another random combat tracker online. It's a lot easier than making several extensive custom statblocks in D&DBeyond.
For anyone wanting to use manual entries for lair actions. I created a monster from scratch and called it lair action. Fill in all the necessary information. Give it a challenge rating of 0 so it doesn't effect difficulty. You can even put the lair actions in one of the descriptions so you can easily see what they are. Then ad it to your encounter and give it an intiative. Not ideal but it's a workaround.
How in the world is this still broken? Really? I am running into the same problem now, and I am absolutely livid to discover it's a known and never ever fixed problem. What in the world do we pay this company for? In what world is it acceptable to allow such an impactful bug to roam free for literal years? Absolutely rancid.
I just started using D&D Beyond this week, and after searching through videos, Google, and ChatGPT for help with the Encounters (Beta) feature, I was surprised to learn that it was added four years ago and still hasn’t been finished—let alone improved.
This makes me reluctant to jump into D&D, especially since I wouldn’t be playing every day or even every week. The issues aren’t just overlooked—they are simple fixes that have been ignored, which tells me there’s little to no active development or maintenance.
The mobile app is underdeveloped, the website isn’t evolving, and yet they continue pushing paid content instead of improving the core experience.
Even the latest feature, Maps, had less than 4% of subscribers watching and only 0.23% engaging with it, which is pretty telling.

Bump. Just want to make sure this is seen by devs. Happy to post it elsewhere.

Having same problem and i did add a manual entry.
Same, it has happened to me twice with boss encounters, so they have a Lair Action as Manual Entry.
Ha, exactly what i was doing.
I ran into this same issue in May 2022. I added two manual entries, and saving quit working on my combat tracker.

Going to necro this thread as of Jan 2024 this is STILL a problem. Adding NPC helper to party as a manual addition borks the resume.
I noticed this when I was testing this the other day, however, it worked after I refreshed the page.
Imagine WotC fixing these problems years after they've existed. Couldn't be me.
