I am attempting to make things simpler for one of my players who’s PC recently acquired a Robe of Useful Items. The whole setup with the Robe having been created with a number of charges equal to the maximum number of potential patches that was initially implemented was (at best) a bit janky in the first place. Now that the robe has been implemented as a container, those charges are more than superfluous and now downright confusing for some folks. To help my player better understand and use the item, and more easily track the patches, I had started adding the items those patches represent to the robe. However, since starting I have encountered 3 separate setbacks to that plan.
The first issue is that we still can’t put containers (or custom items) inside other containers, so the two sack patches got entered under “Notes” as a customization of the Robe, but I know they will be forgotten. (At least for now it’s only a couple of sacks, so this is currently only a minor issue.)
The list of items in that container will inevitably get kinda long. Therefore, the second problem is that the “Hide Contents” clickable is only (at best) a “Momentarily Hide Contents, until you navigate to anywhere else on your character sheet” function. It would be really swell if containers that have been told to hide their contents actually continued hiding their contents until expanded. (Like the way the toggles on the Home tab of the builder know how to stick to a plan.) This is annoying.
The third problem is that nobody remembered to program the Robe of Useful Items to ignore content weight. This is an issue. Just the dozen automatically included patches (minus the two sacks) make the Robe weigh in at 41lbs. For ten patches. No bueno. Considering the Efficient Quiver / Quiver of Ehlonna; Handy Haversack / Heward’s Handy Haversack; and the Bag of Holding all have the capability of ignoring content weight, wouldn’t it make sense for the Robe of Useful Items to also not count content weight?!? You know, since they’re just patches….
Concur. One of my characters in a currently sadly on-hold campaign has a Robe of Useful items that clocks in at 151 pounds. On a 6-Strength wizard waif. It's a big oof. I will also state that half the items that actually exist as patches on her Robe of Useful Items are "Other Possessions" sort of things - Iron Doors, bags of gold, batches of gems, stuff that currently cannot be attached to the Robe since only the Equipment section of the inventory screen can have custom items implemented in it.
The Containers rollout has been great so far, my whole table is deeply pleased with the progress. Muchos thank-ya-kindly's. But man...the Robe of Useful Items is a mess right now.
Heck, the doors / windows would get listed next to the sacks under Notes, the gold would just get added to the PC’s coin purse with the rest of their cash, and stacks of gems can actually be added to the Robe as inventory. That’s part of why I had started the endeavor, because it seemed so doable… at first. Then I realized how crowded the Notes would get,*1 how long the list of inventory would grow, and how effing heavy all those patches would end up being. *woofta*
*(On a related topic: When customizing an item, action, or spell on a touchscreen device without a supplemental mouse, editing the contents of the notes field can be… “frustrating” whenever the note is longer than the field. I know youse all on “the team” are likely used to sitting at a desktop, or at least a laptop when you are using the system. However, please be remember how many of us use the browsers on our phones and/or tablets to interact with your products & services. (Judging by the number of users with issues I have helped with the phrase “turn your phone sideways,” there are a lot of us.) I know youse all got phones in your pockets, you’re alive and it’s the 21st-century. Whenever youse all are checking to see how well stuff you’re implementing works, from time to time could you also please spot check things on an iPhone and an Android to at least cover the most common devices? Thanks.)
