Hello, I'm a new D&D player. My DM has quite a bit more experience, and we were doing a special campaign, and he told me to add expertise on firearms, because my character was 100% based on them. I'd like to know if there is a way to add expertise, even if it's manual. I would also like to know if D&D allows you to have expertise with weapons. Sorry if it's a dumb question, I just haven't read too much of the books, and this is my first adventure where I've had to do this.
Expertise simply grants “Twice Proficiency” in a skill you are already proficient in. (Tool Expertise does the same thing for tools.) Since your DM told you to add it it’s of course okay even if it’s not RAW/I (“Rules as Written/Intended”). To implement it on DDB you would have to “customize” each Attack you have with a firearm to increase your To Hit by an amount equal to your PB (Proficiency bonus).
So, say for instance your character is somewhere between 1st and 4th level, then your Proficiency bonus is +2. If you have a Dex of 16-17, then your Dex mod is +3. That means your total Attack modifier for firearms would be +5 To Hit. You would therefor have to “customize” each firearm on your Actions tab to increase the Attack modifier from +5 to +7. That would be the end result of having “firearm expertise,” even though that’s not really a ring in the game normally.
PS- You would have to adjust the customizations every time your PB increased. Keep in mind that the reason there is no weapon expertise is because the normal MAX To Hit for everything (including spells) is +11 without mafiamagic items to boost that number. Twice Proficiency would rake that to MAX +17 before magic items. (That’s kindasorta busted as all get out.)
Thanks, and I'll tell my DM about it. The large to hit bonus is a bit much, but I guess it's probably because my DM said it was gonna be a very challenging campaign. I'll check with him anyway. Again, thank you!

By the rules as written, Expertise only applies to skills and tool proficiencies, not weapons.

I hope that helps.
