I’ve made plenty of posts about this before but I wanted to ask you guys if you’ve been waiting longer than normal for homebrew to publish. It used to be only a few days which went up to 8 days, then 2 weeks... I’ve been waiting on multiple publishes now for about 2 1/2 weeks. I’m just wondering if anyone else has noticed this increased delay...
It’s now been 3 weeks waiting on Homebrew. What is going on here?
It's called having over 1 million accounts but only seven volunteer mods to manually check every submitted homebrew item. It's... a very poor way to manage such a system which, quite frankly, was entirely foreseeable that it would overwhelm them; and it's only going to get worse.

They really need to find a different way to approve homebrew. Why don’t they have actual employees since this is a huge portion of the business. I mean no one can add homebrew anyway unless they are subscribing.
my only homebrew i have has been in moderation status since 5/16, so I get the wait time is rather unbearable. Of course it would be nice if they hired more moderators, or at least have them assigned to do task on certain days.

The entire D&D Beyond team agrees on this one and have for months!
Several improvements have already been made to the system, along with development time being dedicated to partially automating the process.
We're hoping that additional features, that are currently under development, will further improve our ability to moderate the volume of homebrew that is being submitted.
Why don’t they have actual employees since this is a huge portion of the business.
They do. There are people who are paid to review homebrew submissions.
At this point, the volume of submissions is outmatching the ability to review and accept/reject. The answer isn't to just employ more and more people, as that will almost certainly reduce the quality of the review process by introducing inconsistency between reviewers and what they believe is ok.
tl;dr - it's being worked on and it WILL get better. I appreciate that, "Please wait - we're working on it" is always a difficult message, but that's exactly what's happening here.
Thank you StormKnight for giving us a detailed answer. This is exactly the response I’ve be trying to get. I appreciate you taking the time to give us a peak under the hood.
Dfroggotten, I have also been waiting since 5/16. I have a lot of updates waiting and because of this wait time debacle I have actually halted making new homebrew until this blows over. Hopefully the boys upstairs implement their changes soon
It would be fairly easy just to have a smart algorithm do the job.
Tell the computer what the game rules are, upload the pre-existing content for comparison.
Filter out whatever phrases you didn't want to include....
But, hey, what do I know?
I would love it if you were right and it were "fairly easy" but sadly it just isn't that simple.
There are many, many variables to consider when trying to create such an algorithm and it's not just about creating a filter to check for words/phrases that trigger a rejection.
The current moderation process involves a number of checks, such as (but not limited to):
Is this an existing WotC item/creature/spell or very similar with just a few tweaks?
Is this work published elsewhere on the internet already?
Does the text description match what the homebrew actually has been set-up to do (do the modifiers match)?
Have all sections/modifiers been filled in, so that it will work correctly?
Is this homebrew something campaign specific?
There's a bunch more checks that are performed as well.
Several talented developers in a team are working on solutions to help improve the situation, as I noted above. :)
I feel it's worth the reminder, but everyone does realize that if you're waiting on a specific homebrew to get approved, you can choose to use it instantly as 'Private' homebrew instead, right? Not every piece of creation has to be made publicly available. Private homebrew you create can be used/assigned in your active campaigns immediately.

I agree that in most cases this is true but I myself am using DDB as a platform to get my work out there much like DMsguild. That’s why the approvals are so important to me
The same goes for me, SkillCheck. I'm not running any campaigns (honestly don't have the time nowadays), so I just create homebrew items and wish to publicly share with others to either appreciate or get a kick out of.

I completely understand this aspect, but now we're questioning Dndbeyond's homebrew moderation speed for the sake of promoting user content. The development team has been actively working on a list of priorities to better enhance their product/service across the platform. It would come at a cost to their own service and release schedule if they were to slow down production to accommodate third-party promotion.
As Stormknight touched on, the situation is being evaluated for improvements. The submission of Public homebrew does not require a cost to users and the volunteer moderation team works through the content as they can. It is important for the team to maintain quality and consistency of the approved submissions, as well as to keep on track with service enhancements. While a quick turn around of homebrew is certainly desired, it does not hinder any of the capabilities or features while using the toolset.
We'll be sure to share when further improvements have been enacted.
