Clicked on the item about claiming my free copy of "Hold back the dead" and started through the process, put in all my contact data etc. Would not let me go forward on the cart unless I entered a credit card number, etc. That's not going to happen for a free item. Wouldn't mind having the content in my library but not going to enter credit information for this. Is this going to be fixed?
[edit] I guess since this is 2024 compatible they only are giving it to people who buy the new books. Not sure I am good with paying an annual fee, and then new free content is excluded from me. Another disappointment.
The marketplace system they use cannot process any item without payment details. This isn't uncommon (and in some places it's actually a legal requirement, even if item is free). You will not get charged and payment info won't be saved unless you elect to do so. If you don't want to enter your card details then you can use PayPal.
Processing items this way has many advantages for the company and also for users in general. Adding items to the marketplace makes free content easier to access longterm than some ad on the front page that many people skip or a banner at top people never read. Anyone visiting the marketplace can see the ad for free content and the marketplace will have proper SEO set up for showing up in google searches - encouraging new people to join D&D Beyond and get free stuff as they do. The marketplace is also tied heavily into the way the site does licensing for content so it will be easier in the background for the proper content licensing to appropriate through the same system all licensing is done, rather than through a "claim" button or link.
This also gives users more of a benefit since they'll get a transaction receipt. If you ever lost account access and needed content transferred, you can use the receipt to prove the claim and facilitate the transferral. Such a receipt will also greatly speed up resolution if anything happens to somehow cause content access to be lost. This ensures a clear path to resolution in any such circumstance because your license is treated the same as any purchased content. Also you have slightly more legal rights to content since a "claim button" acquisition is not a transaction but aything through the marketplace, even if free, would be. This grants you more protections.
They're not excluding you from anything. You're excluding yourself.
