Handy haversack, bag of holding, and the homebrew bag of coinage need this feature. (My party has the haversack and the coinage. They will eventually have a chance to obtain 2 bags of holding in addition to some magic quivers.)
I am rather proud of myself for figuring out this formula, though I have no doubt that it is widely known. Nonetheless, here it is:
How to adjust carried weight when using a Container of Holding:
Maximum carry weight (15 x Str) + Container maximum capacity - Container weight = XXX lbs
Go to Container, enter this number with a minus sign (-XXX) in the weight override box.
Result will show a negative weight carried by the character, which is equal to the remainder of weight they can carry until encumbered.
Example:
Str: 15 = 225 lbs max carry
Bag of Holding: 500 lbs capacity, weighs 15 lb at all times
225 + 500 = 725 - 15 = 710 lbs
Enter -710 in the Weight Override box of Bag of Holding.
Character is carrying 107 lbs total, new weight carried shows as -618 lbs, so I can carry another 618 lbs as long as size capacity is not exceeded.
It is a nice solution but that doesn't take into consideration like armor and weapons the character is carrying. These things can only be stowed when not in use.
I suppose I am looking at this from the perspective of a relatively seasoned player (@27+ years) and with DMs/GMs that are as well, if not more so, seasoned.
I know what can or cannot go into a BoH, such as other BoHs/interdementional space, sharp items, etc. as well as the physical size (dimensions) of what can/ cannot go into one. As the current DnD Beyond sheet calculates most things, it does not give us the option of checking a box for where items are stored in order to keep a running check and balance of remaining carrying capacity, this formula works if you can assess what can/cannot go into the container.
It may not be a completely feasible solution, granted, but it is one way to not have the sheet calculate your possessions and try to limit your character to crawling due to over-encumbrance.
The formula works so long as your purpose is just to determine carrying capacity. Most characters wouldn't ever get close to a weight that would overburden them with things NOT in the bag of holding... and for those edge cases, adjust or don't use said formula :)

We have a party with a Bag of Holding and Handy Haversack, and we have no idea if we are still encumbered or not.
Unless we manually add up the weight of the items we put in the Bag or Haversack, and then manually overide the weights of all those items to 0.
D&D Beyond make the best electronic character sheets, but this is missing...
....also I can't put my two heavy crossbows and their bolts on my mount either, and when I buy a riding saddle and saddle bags, they are added to my encumbrance, not the horse.
So I now just total the weight of the items I want to and can put in my Handy Haversack and add that as a negative value overide on the Handy Haversack.
What I've done so far is just customized all the items that I have in the bag to set their weight to zero, as a workaround. Would be nice to have a way to just put things IN the bag though!
Yeah, from a DM point of view it isn't actually about encumbrance for me. It is about knowing who has what.
For example - one chest destroyed everything except magical items (including the person). But that person had a bag of holding and suddenly everything they carried "would have been in the bag of holding, surely".
Similarly if one person has the bag and the group has all their stuff in the bag - when the character goes missing (through a portal, down a chasm etc) you know what is lost rather than relying on peoples opinions etc. Even the best intentioned people don't usually want to "punish" themselves.
The set weight to 0 is probably the best work around for me. Will have to start using that.
So 3 YEARS later and it looks like DnD Beyond still doesn't care about this issue? I have apps on my phone that use multiple inventory lists or account for magic item abilities to assist games that use the encumbrance rules. Using one of those plus a character sheet app (that's just as good as this site) makes me think that I wasted my money here. I was on the fence about dropping my hard earn $$ on this site but kept having people tell me it was worth it. I guess that's what I get for not listening to my gut. But hey at least I got some "cool" digital dice to roll, it's not like there's apps for those all over the place...

Brings a slow knowing smile to your face as you customize the weight to negative 485#?
Meanwhile, fitting with the Christmas spirit I shall call it the Bag of Humbug until it can properly contain things as a container should.

Same request here. Please, this would be a wonderful feature!

I ended up turning off encumbrance rules on my laden characters that possess bags of holding. So this STILL isn't resolved?

I set the weights of the items in those containers to 0, and then organize everything in my inventory by location with emojis like this: https://www.dndbeyond.com/profile/IamSposta/characters/21942605

How do you insert the emojis?

From either my iPhone or iPad. They use the web versions of the emojis so I’m sure you could do it from any device if you know how, I do not.

3 Years later and nothing has been done about this. But they cared to put special dice and rolling dice into D&D Beyond?
