hello, I'm having an issue with one of my player's characters.
my player is playing as a high elf cleric and has proficiencies with simple weapons, and due to him having a -1 to his strength he opted to uses a spear as his simple weapon but it keeps using his Strength modifier instead of his dex. is there any reason for that? I currently customized the weapon so that it reflects his dex score.

Spears do not have the Finesse property and so Dex is not a valid ability score to use with them, they are Strength weapons. The sheet is showing correctly.

Trying to get your physical content on Beyond is like going to Microsoft and saying "I have a physical Playstation disk, give me a digital Xbox version!"
If your cleric friend MC's a level of monk, spear becomes useable with dex.

Any time an unfathomably powerful entity sweeps in and offers godlike rewards in return for just a few teensy favors, it’s a scam. Unless it’s me. I’d never lie to you, reader dearest.
That seems a little weird, doesn't it? You would think that most bladed weapons could be used with dexterity since when using them, you are generally aiming to slash or stab in such a way that the blade cuts the deepest or impales the furthest, thus making it sensible to say that the majority of bladed weapons could use either strength or dexterity. It just makes sense, and then there's DnD.

If you really want to get down to it, most weapons and things in D&D would be Dex instead of Strength. Even throwing a punch choosing to hit fast and with great aim can do considerably more damage than just throwing out a basic strong punch. Even wall-climbing, which in D&D is a Strength based Athletics check, actually relies more on your balance and precision than your strength. To be more accurate, most things use both Strength and Dexterity: but if you had to pick only one, Dex would be more important.
But games and real life are different and one stat for doing nearly everything physical is boring. So, we see Strength and Dexterity often split up in such games as these.
It's the same with Wisdom and Intelligence. In most things you are using a combination of both, and of the two Intelligence is more important. Yet, we see many intelligence focused skills using Wisdom instead - for game reasons.

Conversely, weapons like javelins and bows require a lot of physical strength to use.

Not really. Brute force is required to penetrate armor, and that's a big part of hitting something: pushing through that armor. Dex is simply placing the weapon precisely.

With that path of thought I'd say the choice would be up to the dm.
The spear can be a very rudimentary weapon to be used with very little skill and more brute strength (eg. punching through armor or stopping a charging enemy). Though at the same time precise skilled use to keep enemies at a distance and slip into the gaps between the armor (eg. joints and overlaps) could call for it to be classed as a finesse weapon rather than purely strength based. Im not sure it is a straight forward answer - there for Dm to rule either way game to game.

Thank you.
here is his character sheet with both normal and custom spear and a dagger for comparison: https://ddb.ac/characters/38485481/2w7bQ5
