I noticed that for a (first level) monk's 'unarmed strike' with martial arts, it is using STR modifiers instead of DEX. Example: with a monk that has str+3 and dex+5 - the attack roll shows +5 (3str+2proficiency), where it should be +7 (5dex+2prof) - and then the damage is set as 1d4+3str, where it should be 1d4+5dex as far as I can tell.
RAW (PHB p.78) - Martial Arts: "You can use Dexterity instead of Strength for the attackand damage rolls of your unarmed strikes and monk weapons"
I can see where this might be on purpose since the player can choose between using dex or str for their attacks, but is there a way to set this to either the highest of the two, or lets us pick one, or allow us to manually modify the bonus somehow? Playing with a new player and hoping to make it as easy as possible for them.
Not sure if this is a bug or a feature request, but thank you in advance for any help you can give me!
Is the monk wearing armor or wielding a shield? Note the sentence just above the one you quoted (emphasis mine): “You gain the following benefits while you are unarmed or wielding only monk weapons and you aren’t wearing armor or wielding a shield:”
This is the character (claimed by one of my players, which is why it is no longer on my account)
No armor or shield as far as I can tell, and it weirdly is correctly setting the 1d4 for martial arts unarmed strike damage, which makes me think martial arts is being applied.
The attack stats are correct - the character's Dexterity is +3. The +5 you're looking at is from the character's Dexterity Saving throw. So the current attack info is correct. 5 (3 from dex + 2 from prof), with the damage being 1d4 + 3 (the dex modifier).

Can you provide a link to your character? By default it should automatically select the higher of the two options.
