Do you all WANT DND Beyond's already crappy homebrew to just become Dnd Wiki?
Because homebrew class will lead to that garbage pile repeating, because people can & do misuse the Reddit-style voting system here. Even if granted, a lot of things people think will be allowed...won't("Fixed" official classes by any name, copyrighted references, uncompensated 3rd-party content, evading purchasing material on-site...these all come to mind & are already rampant despite being against site policy).
Sure, why not. With the way the system is set up right now, you can just choose not to add the stuff you don't like.
What people are asking for is choice and option befitting of the hobby.
You obviously need to have a conversation with your dm and your table before introducing homebrew anyway, so whether it is something you dream up yourself or something you subscribe through through the homebrew catalog of varying quality, it still needs to fit your game.
There are so many cool things being created in this hobby, and being able to actually provide something that helps expand it, is the way every community grows. And if anything, if custom homebrew classes were available in the beyond tools, you would probably see a rise in quality of the submission, because you would actually be able to use the class on par with official material.
If you are worried about slop that is fine and probably warranted, but letting other people have the choice and option to create something for themselves will not impact your specific game in any significant or measurable way.
(As for copyrighted material, there are already over-zealous copyright checkers implemented in the homebrew tool, and you would not be able to publish it to a wider audience.)
I don't think they will ever give the ability to create homebrew classes.
Many folks would stop buying books, and just enter new classes by hand. Others would have completely unrecognizable as dnd campaigns, also reducing the demand for new books and products.
I personally would still buy books for new classes, as it would be good value in my opinion for the money. I really only need one or two classes (psion) anyway.
The problem is that if we play using D&D Beyond, if I want to play as a third party class (like my Tanares book has), I simply cannot use D&D Beyond any more. I'd be fine even with just a more blank or generic character page in lieu of allowing for full custom classes.
But seeing as they are adding third party class books on here anyways, I think not allowing it is increasingly more dumb of a decision. There are plenty of third party sourcebooks that are only subclasses or items or spells. And we can add all of them as homebrew already. Why draw the line at classes?
I couldn't agree more. I don't see how they can't just release the same system, they say the classes are more intricate, but I feel like it really can't be THAT much crazier than what subclasses currently offer. I feel like no one really complains about features missing from the homebrew tools here to include more stuff for their subclasses/monsters/spells. I feel like it's pretty comprehensive. SO JUST GIVE IT TO US!!!!!!!!!!! PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I just want to be able to add my swordsage and battle master class. I would love for them to let us make custom classes if only for our own us, but they probably never will.
I love the maneuver system and none of the classes in 5e or 5.5 have the same fill. I would like them to, but I think it comes down to the fact that you would have people creating new classes the put the design team to shame.
Think you could have a new class that was similar to the 5e monk but fix all the issues that they kept ignoring. Or something similar to the sorcery class but they fix the fact that is the only full caster class that can't regain spell slots on a short rest or their sorcery points. If it became more popular than what was officially offered, then the game developers would be in trouble.
This was the issue with Boulders Gate were everyone pointed out how they improved the classes and better balanced them. I also found it disappointing that all the non-magic classes got a 10ft move bonus and that is it.
I mean wow you have the clunky weapon mastery that you can only use once per turn and even you have multiple weapons you can't combine the effects.

There’s…a lot to unpack here, but I do think it’s worth pointing out that there’s nothing in the rules saying you can only use weapon mastery once per turn.
