Are minor properties on magic items already scheduled to be implemented? If this is already being discussed, then please link to the thread, as I could not find it.
Some of these properties vary of course based on where you got the item. For example, a certain DDAL module will drop a magic item that has an additional "you sense Giants within 120 ft", i.e. Sentinel(Giants), 120ft, but there seems to be no way to create an item that has that property on DDB right now.
Thanks for the response. I am not sure what you mean by "non-standard powers." I am asking about the minor properties, which is a defined thing in the DMG. Please see the table at Special Features
[NOTE: I wrote a longer explanation but the WYSIWYG editor ate it :)]
Mainly, I am wondering about "Sentinel" because it applies a buff that the DM needs to know about. They need to know that the character can detect the presence of certain monsters, so it is not just flavor text. Also, "Guardian" applies an initiative bonus. If you make this a straight bonus on the item, it would stack with other items that have the same bonus.
Sentinel follows similarly to a weapon of warning. The item's description is the only place where you are going to read about the weapon waking you for combat. Your DM and you are responsible to account for that the same way you have to for Sentinel minor-property. There really is no place on the character sheet that it would go. The only properties that I can see that would affect the character sheet is Guardian and Language, which can be easily added to a homebrew magic item.
... is Guardian and Language, which can be easily added to a homebrew magic item.
I think you missed the part of my post where I discussed Guardian. If you just add a straight bonus to the item, it will stack with other items that have the same bonus. Isn't a named property like "Guardian" something that is not supposed to stack based on adjustments from the same "named source" not stacking? Looking for the rule about named sources right now but can't seem to pull it up, sorry. On the good news front, these properties don't seem to require wielding/wearing the item, so that means you can sort of write the buffs into the Notes field (as I have been doing) and just keep them there.
Sorry, then yes the bonuses would not stack if multiple magic items had the Guardian property. Guardian could stack with say, a Stone of Good Luck (Luckstone) because while they both contribute to initiative, they are not from the same "source", so an item with Guardian would not stack with another item that has Guardian.
Almost seems like a rare situation though. With minor properties being optional, and needing to have multiple that rolled with the same property. I do agree though that it could be added to prevent this kind of situation.
I agree it is no big deal by itself. I am just wondering if it is being thought about. There is some amount of papering over missing engine features going on in DDB. For example, Sentinel Shield has a straight +5 to passive perception on it, presumably because they did not implement the "advantage is +5 on passive" rule and therefore have to patch this into the item as a straight buff (that would incorrectly stack.) The more of this "we can just make it work with a few extra values in the item database" that the developers choose to do instead of implementing the rules, the more likely this will break at some point in the future. Also, it just feels wrong :) :)
It seems this is still an issue. I can't find any info on adding minor properties to items. I'm trying to create a shield with the Guardian minor-property so it doesn't mistakenly stack with other guardian sources.
My workaround was to add a new Dex skill to the character sheet called "Initiative (Guardian)" and grant it a +2 bonus, then roll initiative with that skill when the character has a Guardian magic item equipped.

For non-standard powers like that, you just write it in the item description.
