A function I'd like to suggest is allowing magic items/feats to modify spell slots. I have an item called a "Ring of Efficient Spellcasting" that grants its wielder two additional 1st-level spell slots. Right now I'm using charges to represent these, but it would be amazing if that item could have a modifier that added two bonus 1st-level spell slots to the attuned character. Negatives could be interesting too, so you could make unique cursed items that give their wielder a buff, but reduce the number of slots they have.
