I've been using maps for a couple of months with a small campaign and have been experiencing some bugs with the grid. Specifically with it not appearing. I haven't seen anybody else having this issue, and when I tried to leave feedback using the feedback tab on maps (as directed on the maps main page), I noticed that the tab was gone completely.
Is the project being abandoned/not being worked on anymore? It would be a bummer to be paying for something that is not being worked on any longer, to say the least.
Maps doesn’t add a grid. If want one included, you’ll need to ensure there’s one on the map image itself.
If the Feedback button is missing, you might have opted out of analytics cookies (see Your Privacy Choices in the site footer below), or you might have an ad blocker that’s hiding it.
Maps is not being abandoned. There’s been several significant features added in the last few months, like quickplay maps, animated maps, and expanded access to Maps. There’s also several features announced for the months ahead, which can be seen on the Maps home page.

You can't use your own maps, you have to choose between one of the nine basic maps (just an uninspired 12 x 20 picture of dirt or grass) and can't add your own NPCs, Monsters, etc. You also can't share content with others at the table, so you have to either pay for the top-tier subscription or everyone has to buy the same content.
Homebrew is the historically free way to play D&D and you can't do that without the top-tier subscription. I feel like all the stuff you get from the highest-tier subscription should be available without a subscription to people who purchase content, such as the PHB. A few MB of my battlemaps or homebrew Monsters/NPCs in their S3 bucket hardly costs them anything. They really should change the subscription fee to pay for extra storage beyond a few MB, instead.
Requiring a subscription to use your own homebrew feels like paying for an additional license to be allowed to move the furniture you already bought into your apartment. "Playing D&D" on the free tier feels like sleeping on the tile in your kitchen with no pillows or blankets. It's wild to expect nothing from a free product and still be disappointed.
"Free to all" is too generous of a term IMO. ... "Playing D&D" on the free tier feels like sleeping on the tile in your kitchen with no pillows or blankets. It's wild to expect nothing from a free product and still be disappointed.
While I understand your reasoning my players and I (all free tier users) are just happy to play with maps using all the digital content I own on beyond (got a lot of bundles since they started doing them). Maps at the free tier gives us everything we need, and feels quite comfy at that. Its the first time I have considered getting a subscription. I probably will do that eventually, but for the moment just using the free rules for characters and using the maps I have is perfect. Even with homebrew adventures the DMG provides enough generic maps so we wont need to homebrew maps for quite a while. This is a great time to be playing D&D.

SpamAndTuna already mentioned Maps is still being worked on.
But I did want to mention that they recently changed things so you don't have to pay for a subscription to use Maps anymore. It's free to all now.
This is a signature. It was a simple signature. But it has been upgraded.

I have Darkvision, by the way.

Here I was assuming that the grid piece I added when uploading a map would add a grid. That's my fault.
Thank you for clarifying!
