I was just watching the dev update. The maps feature is quite cool.
I use a tool called https://inkarnate.com/ to build maps, and stitch them together in Photoshop to make "Megamaps" as I stitch more details I put them up on a place called
EasyZoom.com
Here is a sample of a continent I'm working on (only a few sections zoom into higher detail as you can see).
Now I have no idea how ambitious DnDBeyond.com is going to go with maps on the Homebrew side, but it would be great if you could consider the possibility of having "mega maps" super high resolution maps that we could import into DnDBeyond at some point that would be zoomable to a point (like google maps). More so though, if we could do the meta-data layering on top the way you hinted at that would be just great (ie, zoom towards a city click on it and load it's map).
In an ideal world, I could see people creating and publishing say cities dungeons, battlefields, etc. Others could snap them up and put them into a location of their own world maps.
Very exciting stuff!
Sincerely,
Envaris

So, now that we've talked about the feature a little, I'll add a few details as an FYI. The size of the Sword Coast map that was shown was 10,200 x 6,600. I hope that we'll be able to get a little high resolution than that, but we'll have to see. It's a least a decent place to start. That can give you an idea of what the image res would need to be to achieve similar results.
What Adam showed today is pre-alpha, so things will change and evolve on it for sure, but at least gives a hint of what's to come. We're super excited about it!
I think the tiff format can support some pretty high resolutions. I think the file limit is 4GB for something to like Photoshop to export in that format before it cries. By way of example the map I linked above is 61440x46080 and little over 900MB. That's why a service like EasyZoom is so important for me. No need to download entire image, the browser and behind the scene service take care of being able to visualize segments in a reasonable amount of time (like Google Maps). But I'm probably an edge case :P

You know, I gotta say, this Interactive Maps thing-- besides being awesome by itself. I mean seriously Google Fantasy Maps?-- really feels like the kind of step you might take toward the eventual goal of "Virtual Tabletop/Gameboard". It seems to me there's not that big a step (conceptually, I know the coding would be more complex) between having links on an adventure map that key to an encounter in an adventure--> to popping up encounters built in an Encounter Builder--> to launching a Combat/Initiative Tracker (with integrated dice rolling)--> to "hey, look at that, we can pop counters onto that map which has a grid scaled to 5x5 ft squares . . ."
I'm so excited about the map thing. Will we be able to add custom waypoints on the map? Is that something being discussed at all? I only ask for things like Tales from the Yawning Portal where the dungeons don't have a set location but there is a suggestion of where it could be placed. Some of the suggestions are vague like putting it in a forest. It'd be great if we could drop those waypoints onto the map ourselves. But I realize it may not be a priority since it's still in development and not a public product yet.
And correct me if I'm wrong but the Sword Coast map would be an aggregate of all the SC maps in teh 5e published adventures, yes? So it would have Phandalin and Thundertree on there in addition to places like the Well of Dragons from ToD? (As examples. The SC maps in the two adventures have their pertinent locations shown but later adventures and the SCAG don't have the locations from the individual adventures. Which is unhelpful when you're trying to calculate distances in case your PCs decide they want to go back to Phandalin or that now is a good time to go clear out Thundertree when they didn't while going through LMoP).
We do have the goal or letting users place their own markers (which would only be visible to them) in addition to having official points of interest markers.

I bought the legendary bundle a while back and it said that I would have a discount on all future content for purchase on the site. Does that still apply for the maps bundle?
He's doing some amazing work when it comes to maps, bringing them to life with audio and video. if the next generation of Maps/VTT can start heading in this direction it would be amazing!

No. The legendary bundle is only “rules” and adventure “books.” Badeye (project lead) has said more bundle options are coming, including a Maps bundle.
Can someone point me to the source to where this discussion is stemming from? I'm very confused as to what's being discussed, aside from seeing that maps are now available for purchase on DnDBeyond.

Something that could be cool in that regard would be to have the DM be able to add locations on the overworld map to a "timeline" of sorts so you can essentially see a path of the route your players took through the world and the locations that they've been to (and when)

Something like hero's path in breath of the wild? That could be entertaining.

This locked thread is the discussion about the digital maps not being part of digital content that we were promised to have discounts to with the legendary bundle when we first bought into it because they didn't want to tip thier hand that eventually there would be other products for sale.
If you go into the market place you can see that the official WOTC product Tactical Maps Reincarnated is now available for purchase.

I just want to tell everyone "happy gaming" and actually mean it. Whatever your game is, just have fun with it, it is after all, just a game.

To be fair, that only changed recently. that is not what it used to say. dndbeyond changed the wording without telling everyone which is bad in my opinion. Usually when a company changes it, they have to send out a change of terms and agreements notice. rewording it without notice is just wrong..
They have since acknowledged the mistake of the miscommunication and have apologized which is all we can really ask for at this point.
