I just noticed the Homebrew section is missing a component, Non-Magic items. There's no section of the homebrew for making items that are intended to be non-magical but aren't quite in any of the source the materials for whatever reason. Honestly, I think this is a missed opportunity. You just call that part of the homebrew Special Gear/Equipment to signify it's not within the realm of standard gear and equipment.
One of my favorite things for my homebrew games is to give characters non-standard equipment that usually has no magical or mystical properties of its own, but does have certain aspects that a bit different from gear and equipment that you can find in the official books. A great example of this is a piece of equipment I call the Chain-Scythe, it's a War Scythe with an eight-foot shaft and ten-foot chain that has a weight on the end of said chain. Can it be found in D&D source materials or on D&D Beyond? No, because it's a homebrew item whose stats can only be found on paper and documents I've worked on for my games. The Chain-Scythe is basically a westernized upgraded version of the classic Japanese weapon employed by shinobi (better known as ninjas for some of the most arbitrary reasons when you get down to the nitty-gritty) called the kusarigama, another item not found in the source materials or on D&D Beyond.
Both weapons named here have no inherent mystic properties in their base format, a DM can do whatever they want gear and equipment in their games. Point here, there's a part of the homebrew on this site that has been neglected and that needs to be accounted for moving forward.
So, what are some non-magical items you've all come up with for your homebrews?
I would really like to be able to add custom equipment for some of the stuff I use for my homebrew. Best example is Windlass crossbows, which I allow to use strength in place of dexterity for attack rolls.

You can do this by giving it the finesse weapon property.

Tried it - creating a magic weapon requires you to use a base weapon - and the properties of the base weapon can't be changed.

You can't remove properties but you can add them. The modifier is weapon property.

I would really love to be able to make tools and add them to proficiency, such as homebrew musical instruments or tool kits.
There is a way to do this already, although it would be nice to streamline it by making it possible to create mundane items.
Doing it now takes two separate pieces:
-create a custom proficiency (click on the gear at the bottom of the skills section, click on “custom skills” and then “Add Custom skill”. Fill in the info)
-create a custom item (click on Equipment in the big box on the right side of the character sheet; then click the Manage equipment button, then “Custom Items” then “Add Custom item)

This technically serves as a work around, but skills are not tools. We should be able to add custom tool proficiencies to the tool section.

You can remove them aswell, The Modifier is Ignore Weapon Property.
It's been over a year and DDB still hasn't done this. Now the magic items homebrew is just littered with non-magical stuff. Seems like quite an insane oversight.
D&D Beyond is aware of the demand for homebrew mundane equipment and has the ability to do so on the long term roadmap as part of the homebrew overhaul. It's not an oversight; it was something that was intentionally not part of the initial scope of the homebrew tools, but they've listened to the community and have added it to future plans.
is it possible to make a homebrew magic weapon and make it show on the proficiency list for instruments? i was trying to make a combat ukulele that could be used as a instument.
Hello, First off, thanks for all the work that goes into DnD Beyond and your responsiveness to feedback from the community.
You guys might already be aware of this but i thought I would raise it here as it pertains to making equipment:
I've been enjoying the inventory system, and like the customization of the cost and weight of items. Mainly, keeping track of character weights that may set of traps or hazards in the dungeon. Some of my players even add the material component for their spells (Powdered Silver, Diamond Dust, etc.)... mostly those that get consumed when casting the spell.
I've noticed that when you use and existing magical item or equipment you can customize the weight down to a fraction of a lb (i.e. 0.01lbs).
=> But when you make a "Custom Item" (like what they have been doing for material components) in the equipment tab, it can only be rounded to a full number (1lb).
Is there a way to refine the "custom item" ability to be customizable like a magic item or equipment?
Thanks :-)

It is a planned feature. It will get added eventually.
In the meantime, people are just using the Magic Item homebrew and keeping the magic part out of their creations.

You don't need to create an item for that, you can just create a custom attack directly on the player sheet.

Hmm. Let me give this a try. Thanks!
