Would WotC/Curse be able to confirm what funding model(s) are being considered for this app.
There is a lot of push back already based on the assumption that people who have spent a lot of money to buy the books will have to repurchase content online.
What kind of incentives can be offered to those who've already spent a lot of money on books to even consider this app?
It's funny, I hadn't even considered it a possibility there might be a pay to play model for this new tool and certainly hope they don't intend for this to be a major means of monetization.
That being said, it's being developed by the Curse team (part of Twitch now apparently) which already has a premium membership which I would expect to cover this (if there will be a charge.)
I currently play more Pathfinder where I have numerous free options for creating character sheets, and the ultimate free online resource at d20pfsrd.com. If they're going to be competitive they will need to be sure they're not pricing themselves out of the casual user domain. (Unrelated, but they could also likely get more of my money if they would release PDF versions of their books as well.)
I look forward to an official response, though won't expect them to have it figured out until closer to the end of beta.
Yes, they are stating this will be a pay to play type thing. Similar to what's been in the past or different has not yet been positively stated, but many are, quite rightly, exclaiming displeasure at the idea of paying for D&D 5 a second, third and fourth time (store purchased materials, back ups through DriveThru RPG, Fantasy Grounds, and Roll 20 are the common multi-cost causing platforms).
