I'm wondering, its being widely accepted that things won't be the same even after COVID-19 passes. In the present different parts of the world will likely have self-isolation policies for different periods of time and will weather through the crisis at different rates.
Does this shift DDB's priorities at all? I've been an advocate for a DDB built VTT for a long time. Does the current situation accelerate plans for VTT in any way? I believe it's the second highest voted feature request and it's only 15 votes from being the top requested priority by the community
The reason I say this is because I think this is a huge opportunity. A company like Zoom went from 10M users to over 200M users in a few short months. If DDB was the platform for the VTT experience I could see a huge swatch of customers switch over (or sign up for a VTT subscription tier, I would happily take my Roll20 pro sub money and switch to DDB VTT).
Many Thanks and Stay Safe,

Want to see Virtual Table Top like no other before it built within DnDBeyond.com? Upvote the feature request. It's 2nd highest voted so far:
NOTE: You will need to setup a zendesk account (which is not your DnDBeyond.com account, the team uses this 3rd party software). It's easy to do and your votes are needed!
I agree that this is a huge opportunity but I think a lot of what they are doing right now already fits in with the building blocks and frameworks for a future VTT. They need to move faster on this which would likely require funding. The more people use other platforms like Roll20 and purchase content in those marketplace's the less likely they will be enticed to switch when or if DnDBeyond stands up their own VTT.
I would LOVE to see D&D Beyond start a VTT. Just completed the recent survey and it was top on my list.
personally, I purchase hard cover on most all books, and now I just picked up the essentials here. Don’t like paying twice for the same material... let along a 3rd time if I go to another VTT. But that is just me. on a side note, I am new to VTT as I normally run or play in campaigns for over 20 years. Now with everyone on lockdown... learning something new.
I agree. The change was easier for me because my friends and I played over 25 years in 2nd Edition. We never moved to the intervening editions. When 5e came out it seemed interesting. But only when DDB came alone with Content Sharing did I sign up for 5e. I've bought a few books, but went Legendary Bundle with DDB, Master Sub, kept up with new content on DDB and have never looked back.
I did have to get a Roll20 Pro Sub, and even then I have not purchased any content on that platform aside from some maps, backgrounds, and tokens.
I would in a heartbeat drop my Roll20 Pro Sub and pay for a DDB VTT Sub Tier.
I also feel this is the window to lock-in a huge base of people. It's very likely that COVID-19 will be front and center until September 2020 (restrictions may ease or go away, but mark of COVID-19 will still be fresh imo).
If DDB can hammer out a VTT Alpha in less than 2 months then it's possible. You need to set Wildly Important Goals (WIGs) :P

Bear in mind that the team doing development for D&D beyond is likely working from home, which does disrupt the ability to do development, and that a VTT is not a small project (they would probably have to add a lot of development staff, based on what I've seen them develop so far, unless they just license someone else's work).

I was thinking the same thing, about licensing someone else's work or buying someone out considering they just got the encounter builder up.
I'm now in the position of having paid for master tier for quite a while now, with most of my content on DDB (I just have the basics and a few essentials in physical form), but I'm having difficulty keeping my players on DDB. My players are looking to move over to roll20 now that we can't meet up every week, so VTT on DDB would be a Godsend. Please, even if you just just license it from someone else, I'll even pay double the subscription cost if I have to.

Until they build a VTT use the Beyond20 browser extension. I am in the same position as you and this keep the ability to continue using Beyond character sheets while using roll20 as a VTT.
How about acquire one of the VTT's already out there to get a head start? I'm using Astral now and there are some great things about it. But it is also very much in development with only 3 developers. If curse could buy them out, that might give the head start needed,

Or they could just license the product. But it's worth understanding that, even if they did suddenly decide to invest in a competing VTT product (and it's a fairly substantial investment, so I'm not at all convinced they would want to do so), it would probably take a year or more to see significant results.
Even after this whole pandemic dies down so many people will have seen and used VTT's that this style of play will continue to rise. My group which plays in person was using one on a TV. It also helps if one can't make it in person for whatever reason they can still dial in remotely and play. As a DM it is way faster and cheaper for me to prepare my game digitally than to play arts and crafts every week hand crafting maps, minis, handouts, etc.
Sure, but the problem is that pulling in new users isn't the same as pulling users from established platforms. People who decided to use roll20 or fantasy grounds or whatever during this situation aren't going to switch to a new product unless that new product has pretty large functional advantages.

Man, a VTT in DNDbeyond would be so perfect.
