Yes, the Longsword is close but the damage is off compared to 2E. The same as with a Battle axe vs. a War axe. Patiently waiting for a custom weapons mod...
you can add a static point of damage to the extra damage it deals by type. So for example instead of adding 1D6 fire damage, you can have it inflict 1 point of slashing.
Versatile makes the most sense, instead of having a million entries for different sword types. Bastard swords, Broadswords, Longswords, etc. All have the same basic shape of long straight blade, fixed tang, and handle with butt cap, there is a ton of variance even between two things that could both safely be considered longswords so having one catch-all versatile tag makes good sense mechanically. There's nothing stopping us from adding detail info to up the flavor on players who want to swing around a variant.
I had to do the opposite - in the base build in homebrew, change the bonus to "melee weapon attacks" from "magic" and it doesn't bump the damage, it only bumps the to-hit.
Hello everyone. I am trying to change the damage dice on a homebrew item suchs a a long bow. I am trying to change it from 1d8 to 2d4. How do I do this? Our DM loves giving us all overpowered custom weapons, and I can't get any of them in D&D Beyond because I can figure out how to make it happen.

It’s not possible. You will need to create a custom action instead. I keep hoping they will open up the homebrew options for weapons more. Every request for that ability helps.

Creating an Action? That's interesting. Is it as straight-forward as it would seem or do you have any recommendations?
In the character sheet, on the Actions tab (in the big box to the right of the sheet if one is using a computer or a tablet in landscape), click on “Manage Custom”. Choose weapon from the drop-down. It adds a custom action. You then have to tap on the name “Custom Action” to edit it. That part it is not intuitive and needs some work. But one you have the edit “pane” open, it should be fairly straightforward.
Ah yes! I believe I have done that. While that IS a work-around, it sucks not being able to make an item to easily share OR when you're the DM and you want to make a custom item to 'reveal' later. Thanks for the reminder tho!
I just noticed I need this feature for a homebrew utility weapon. I basically made a hookshot from Zelda and based it off of a heavy crossbow. The problem is I want it to have a range of 30 feet and a lower damage die.
Bump yet again, coming from 5th edition character sheet on Android this has been a REALLY painful transition. Every time I turn around I seem to bump into another limitation of the system. Really did not expect something as simple as this to be one of them.
Ugh. Just spent hours trying to change a dmg dice on a weapon until i found this thread. What a waste of time. Seriously, how is this still a limitation?

Because they're adding the feature as part of the homebrew overhaul. Remember that being able to homebrew and modify base equipment will have far reaching effects on the homebrew system in general because base equipment is the building block of every magic item or armor.
this seems like a very easy thing to fix. it would take just a few drop downs and poof problem solved i even have written this into my magic item creator in excel. so this is utterly ridiculous that this is still an issue.

While this is most true and perhaps not something we all think about, I'm hoping they make it an modular fix enables a weapon to become 'custom' and then making it it's own thing rather than changing ALL dagger to 1d6 as opposed to the ONE DAGGER you wanted to change.
Also, on the roadmap, the homebrew revamp is still on the long term plan, exactly where it was a year ago.. don't plan on this to be made permanent for .. years.. if ever. Maybe a competitor could push the innovation, but right now DDB is the only game in town.
Yes hello, I would also like to shout into this void that the ability to homebrew base weapons would be amazing. Changing the damage dice and also the range of a base weapon would be wonderful. Quite surprised this isn't possible.

The longsword apes a bastard sword pretty well.
Hand-and-a-half swords are probably the origin of the Versatile weapon type.

If you set the base item to a net and then add additional damage modifiers that kind of works but it does look super messy

Man, I would love to change the damage dice to a weapon.
