So this recently came up during a small group session and I was just trying to get clarification for the spell
I get the gist of the 2d8 damage works, but what came in question was the 1d6 damage. I assumed it was the same type as whatever was chosen. but the player in question suggested that it wasn't, it was just a 1d6 damage (but the problem is all damages listed, even in spells are all a type one way or another.. unless I'm forgetting a spell).
I've looked around and found a few different things that suggest all the same type of damage... but I was just trying to poke around and see if anyone had a source to point out, or general consensus about how ti work (it does not help that the way DnD beyond has the spell set up it only implies the damage for the 2d8 portion and not the 1d6 portion.
And I just realized I posted this in the wrong forum, that's lovely... see what lack of sleep does.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
"On a hit, the target takes 2d8 + 1d6 damage. Choose one of the d8s. The number rolled on that die determines the attack’s damage type, as shown below."
Roll 2d8 and 1d6.
The d8s: 3 , 3
The d6: 2
So we got a 5 and 8 on the d8s. We can then choose either Lightning or Thunder damage. Let's say Lightning.
The bolt does 5 + 8 + 5 lightning damage which is 18.

The d6’s increase in number when upcast, the d8’s stay the same. If you roll the same number on the d8’s then the spell bounces and hits another target of tge casters choice.
The d8s determine the attack's damage type. The attack is all of it, d6 and all. So if the attack type is psychic, then all of it, 2d8+1d6 for L1, is psychic. The d6s are included as well.
If you're not willing or able to to discuss in good faith, then don't be surprised if I don't respond, there are better things in life for me to do than humour you. This signature is that response.

Fifth Edition D&D doesn't have untyped damage.
Find your own truth, choose your enemies carefully, and never deal with a dragon.
"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.
The d6 is of the same damage type as the rest.
Thanks for the help folks!
