Yeah I think part of it is the idea of 'psionics are a sci fi thing' that may be a part of it. Or maybe a sense of feeling like magic is being threatened if someone writes something that has psionics being better than magic.
We just have to acknowledge that magic and psionics are different and that not all of the magic rules should apply to psionics.

"............anybody got any potatoes? We could drop a potato in each hole an' see which ones get viciously mauled by horrible monsters?"
As someone who grew up on Heralds of Valdemar, 'psionics is sci-fi crap!' holds no water. Many, many authors have included 'mind magic' in their fantasy books. Load of hooey, that is.
And as a fan of sci-fi, steampunk, crystalpunk, and genre blend-ups, who's to say "psionics is sci-fi!" is bad? People need to get over themselves and let other folks have the stories they want to have without spending half of a thread asking for help with psionics throwing shade on the entire idea.
Go for it, Kezza. Don't let the yaybos throw you off.
Let's stay on topic please, which is describing the visuals of psionics in game. The mechanics of said abilities is a topic for another thread; please do not co-opt others discussions to have (the same) arguments about if/how psionics should be in D&D
The targets of psionics might see a warping of the space around the source of the ability.
For example, an Aberrant Mind Sorcerer might be seen as having a lensing effect just behind the sorcerer by those who are targeted by a psionic attack, but everyone else not targeted won't. This effect would still be seen by those who succeed on saves if they can see the sorcerer.
A person exerting psionic abilities might have veins become visible either by dilation or even glowing or both.
A person using psionics might have their eyes glaze over or turn completely black.
People targeted by a psionic ability might see the source as a bright light.
Maybe, a psionic ability causes targets to see a glowing person with bulging glowing veins and black eyes with a lensing effect behind the person while everyone else sees someone who seems to be trying really hard not to poop.

Please do not contact or message me.
I don’t mind Psionics being a form of “magic” per se, I just don’t want it to be just another form of spellcasting.

Mine is a half mind flayer. So that's fun.
