As far as Avariel go, I made some stats for the similar Ee'aar elves of Mystara which I would use if I ever ran something in the Realms.
Ee'aar Elf Elf Weapon Training. You have proficiency with the longsword, shortsword, shortbow, and longbow. Flight. You have a flying speed of 30 feet. To use this speed you can't be wearing heavy or medium armor, and you can't exceed your carrying capacity.
I use the standard carrying capacity rules of being able to lug up to your Strength score x 15 just fine, over that limit and speed gets reduced.

I don't understand the armor restriction. Real world full plate (not the ceremonial or jousting stuff, but actual battle armor) weighed as little as 30lbs. Surely a race of flyers would develop at least the lighter medium and heavy armors? Is it a balance thing? because as is, that seems much less powerful than the phb races. WIthout the armor restriction, it would be about in line with other elves. Drow are hard to judge, because so many DMs aren't going to really enforce Sunlight Sensitivity, but the Wood and High Elves, for sure.
I have no problems with it and I've played it quite a bit.
The armor restriction for the race is just an old rule from when the race was originally playable. It is because they have hallow bones that break easily we decided to keep that rule.

Interesting. The hollow bones thing, I've also always found fascinating. If humans had bones like birds', but sized up for out bodies, they'd be even stronger than ours, it turns out. The hollow tube, and the specific way it is formed and grows, is incredibly strong. It is just that we can snap the bones of small birds easily because we are like storm giants compared to them.
But it's a magic game about make believe elves and dragons, so I shouldn't worry over it.
Either way, I would definitely give them some skills or something, because it is just getting markedly less than any other official race except maybe Aarakocra, who are nerfed for a balance overreaction. They probably play fine because stuff like that doesn't show up easily if everyone is having fun, but if it's working for your game, obviously, that's what matters at your table.
I like lizardfolk, and rather enjoy the concept of most non-standard races from Mystara/The Known World such as lupines, rakasta, and tortles (though there isn't much info to base a 5E PC race on for that last one which has caused my 5E Mystara homebrewing to grind to a halt, because I want pretty much everything to be available and I can't figure out tortles, and until I do I can't move forward). Also the giff from Spelljammer, because everybody needs British Hippofolk IN! SPACE!
I was listening to Dragon Talk a week or two ago (no idea which episode because i've been listening to back episodes between Fridays to get my fix), and Mearls was talking about how much he hates the tortles, and that if he has his way they will never be in 5E. They were kinda joking about it, but it seemed like he really does hate tortles...

As a player I love playing non-standard races, in fact, I'm not sure I've ever played a human...
As a DM I love when players want to play non-standard races, but there's some that I'm just not crazy about. Tiefling and Asamir are at the top of that list; I don't know why I just think they are not that interesting or exciting. I don't get the draw, maybe it's because they don't seem all that distinct in culture and flavor to me. I once played a Tiefling warlord in a short lived 4e game, and that was okay, because my buddy and I worked up this whole spartan/greek sort of martial culture that our Tiefling characters came form in a sort of BSG inspired backstory, and the DM was like "okay, yeah that's really cool." However the as-written background for them being the result of sorcerous infusion of infernal bloodline into human cultures was a little to bland for a whole race, sure cool origin for a single character in a gothic horror campaign to have a Rosemary's Baby sort of back story, but to have that as the explanation for a whole PC race, and then the stock culture to be Human or Infernal, well lets just play a human or a denizen of the infernal plane...
In my home-brew setting Tieflings, Asamir, Aarakocra, Dragonborn, and a few others are either very rare or unique creatures. Because they don't really jive with the flavor of the region of my world that most things are set in.
As a player though (which I don't often get to be these days), I've been really interested in the lizard folk in 5e. I'm keen to play something so alien and other in their views and being.
Yeah... I honestly tend to play a lot of out of there races. Currently I have three shadar-kai (Can you tell my favorite race?), a half dragon, An aasimar, an aaracockra, shardmind (homebrew for 5e), a succubus/imp, and a few others... I enjoy the dynamics and playing with a more... out of the box race. The classes for all of these are all over the place as well... it's always fun to go off the beaten path.
As a DM I encourage it as well. Especially when running a campaign in the astral plane.
By far, my all time favorite character is Vithka, a Githzerai. As a teenager in Limbo, she manifested Wild Magic sorcery, which was a source of great consternation and embarrassment for her, as the Githzerai normally pride themselves on their mental discipline and mastery over chaos. When her wild-magic mishaps began to disrupt those around her, she entered a Githzerai monastery and learned the ways of the Shadow Monks to try to hone her mental discipline and keep the sorcery under control. Later, when Illithids attacked her monastery from a nautiloid ship, killing many of her brother and sister monks, she took to the path of the Horizon Walker Ranger, leaving Limbo behind and vowing to devote the rest of her life to hunting Illithids and thwarting their influence. So as of now, she's a triple class character: 2nd level sorcerer (wild magic), 4th level monk (way of shadow), 3rd level ranger (horizon walker).
I also have a really fun character named Scratch-Step, who's a Kenku Giant-Soul Sorcerer! :P

I haven't yet the opportunity in a campaign but at some point I would love to play a firbolg.
Mostly just because it seems like it would really suit my own personality.

Tayn of Darkwood. Lvl 10 human Life Cleric of Lathander. Retired.
Ikram Sahir ibn Malik al-Sayyid Ra'ad, Second Son of the House of Ra'ad, Defender of the Burning Sands. Lvl 9 Brass Dragonborn Sorcerer + Greater Fire Elemental Devil.
Viktor Gavriil. Lvl 20 White Dragonborn Grave Cleric, of Kurgan the God of Death.
At the moment my favourites of non-standard (Not included in Player's Handbook) races are orc and lizardfolk. I think orcs and lizardfolks are considered too much as bad guys. I like how argonians and orcs are implemented in The Elder scrolls series as "normal" race. Tabaxi / Khajit fits on same category.
I *always* play nonstandard races if the GM allows. I've been at this since Dwarf, Elf, and Halfling were CLASSES (original Red Box, BAYBAY), and I've played enough of the basic races that I'm bored to tears of 'em. I've even run a couple games where they don't exist.
Gimme some Shifter, some Warforged (ALL THE WARFORGED), some Tabaxi, some Hengeyokai/Kitsune ...

We do bones, motherf***ker!
Probably Aasimar

Firbolgs and Tritons are my to go race in 5E. I also love the Warforged.

I miss not having Wemics in 5e, love that race.
My escapism is to escape. Why would I play myself in a fantasy world? Wemic, Lizard-man, Tiefling, Kobold. love em all.

Gonna play a Githyanki in an upcoming campaign. Loved those things since I got I got my hands on the Fiend Folio back in 81.
Nice. The gith have been favorites of mine since then too. :)
Kenku is my favorite playable race, sad to say I've had few opportunities to play as one.
