we had a discussion in our last session about the spell detect thoughts. The point of the group is, if you use this spell to detect the others thoughts, without going deeper in his mind, the person also know there is someone in his mind? It doesn't make any sense if the other person already knows, as long as you don't delve deeper into their thoughts.
But if I read the spell, he knows it, is it correct?
"Either way, the target knows that you are probing into its mind, and unless you shift your attention to another creature’s thoughts, the creature can use its action on its turn to make an Intelligence check contested by your Intelligence check; if it succeeds, the spell ends."
About the situation: The group saw a man through a window and wanted to listen to his superficial thoughts to see what he was thinking. Since the spell says he'll definitely notice, this guy alarmed some others and the situation escalated. Would the man really have noticed unless you delved deeper into the mind with the spell?
I feel like the spell text is pretty straightforward. Sounds like your players didn't read the spell description and are trying to backtrack now that they have to face consequences for their actions.
To put it another way, it's an interrogation spell but your players want to use it for spying.
The target only knows that you are probing into its mind if you delve deeper. The wording of "Either way, the target knows ..." is in regards to whether or not the Target succeeds in their Wisdom saving throw.
The "Either way, the target knows that you are probing into its mind" in the spell description of Detect Thoughts, as written, refers to the immediately preceding text, which is:
As an action, you can either shift your attention to another creature’s thoughts or attempt to probe deeper into the same creature’s mind. If you probe deeper, the target must make a Wisdom saving throw. If it fails, you gain insight into its reasoning (if any), its emotional state, and something that looms large in its mind (such as something it worries over, loves, or hates). If it succeeds, the spell ends. Either way, the target knows that you are probing into its mind[...].
If you just cast Detect Thoughts, you just get the surface thoughts, and you are not detected*. You can then choose to, as an Action (not included as part of the spell), probe deeper. Pass or fail though, doing so (probing deeper) will cause the spell to be detected by the target.
* When speaking purely of by virtue of having cast.the spell - if they spot you chanting and waving your penny around, they may well detect that.
If you're not willing or able to to discuss in good faith, then don't be surprised if I don't respond, there are better things in life for me to do than humour you. This signature is that response.
I have a question. Im in a round with someone who wants to read my mind. So player wants to read players mind, is this even possible and if can i block it with something? Or what are the counters to this?
Can it be done? Sure. It's not intended for that and as a DM who has become quite critical of the concept of PvP, I'd be very adverse to allowing it in a manner against your (the player's) will. It can be done, though.
Ways to block it? Antimagic and similar effects might do it. Or just tell your DM that you're unhappy with PvP - that would be an instant stop in my games. Otherwise, if they're just probing surface thoughts, then not really. You can ensure that "2 feet of rock, 2 inches of any metal other than lead, or a thin sheet of lead blocks you", but there's no save in this case. If they probe deeper, then you get the save.

As far as I know it is not possible fora player to read another player’s mid, but it is totally possible for a PC to read another PCs mind with detect thoughts. PC v PC ≠ P v P. It’s important to remember the distinction between player and character to prevent people’s feelings from getting hurt.
