I'm still confused as to the purpose. It was claimed that they were attempts to bypass moderation by appearing innocuous then editing itself into spam, which may have been true at one point, but that thread has been around a while now (and likewise a copycat thread dated a week ago), and nothing's happened. Kind of seems pointless now because even if it did change...no one would see it because it's several pages back now.
If you're not willing or able to to discuss in good faith, then don't be surprised if I don't respond, there are better things in life for me to do than humour you. This signature is that response.

So I don't see the point?
Links aren't for the forum readers; they're likely for google juice.
As for why it didn't happen? There's any number of reasons the process could fail. If the account they're logging in to DDB with got killed, they can never edit the post. If the spammer never pays up, they won't bother. They could just lose track of all their accounts.
Given it seems to be the main spamming methodology here, there's a good argument that DDB should disable editing after some period of time.

If you see a post you suspect is spam, please report it rather than replying
I report, but I will also reply if I know it is spam and copy-paste from reddit and not by the author. This is so other people aren't going to also report, reducing the redundant reports, and so people aren't bothering with genuine replies and such in a thread that's just going to get deleted soon.

Wouldn't more people reporting it be better because then the mods'd be more likely to see it?

Disabling editing has the potential to create many more problems and not really solve this one. Disabling post editing is a poor way to implement a quick fix that will effect every user not just the spammers.
Report and mods can delete, clunky but it works without taking anything away from the real users of this site.

If it's anything like the reporting system for a forum I used to moderate: definitely not. Every report creates a new report ticket and notification. Hopefully it is a smarter system on here that collates the reports so the moderators aren't spammed. But on the system I was having to use, it was annoying as all heck to see 60+ notifications and tickets, all for one post made 2 hours ago.
I've never encountered a system that uses number of reports as a priority strategy, since everything gets seen to anyway no matter the number.

Recently, a new type of Reddit spam post started popping up. Rather than creating their own spam thread, these new posts seek to hijack legitimate threads by copying a random response from a D&D Reddit thread and replying to a legitimate D&D Beyond thread with said response. Just like the original spam threads, these posts are later edited to contain spam links.
Sometimes this post can be easy to detect - the response they copy is a complete non sequitur, clearly betraying it was copied from a different topic. However, I have seen at least one instance where the spammer was lucky enough to copy something just close enough that it seemed like it was a legitimate response - legitimate enough others interacted with the post and it survived long enough they added the imbedded link.
Just something to be aware of. Another new annoyance in the inexplicable use of D&D Beyond for assorted illegitimate purposes.
Just a note... I saw a post that was made by a brand new user (account created same day as the post), and it was not written very well, and I assumed it was a BOT. I stated that I thought it was a BOT, and that just in case, they were not a BOT, answered the question as best as I could.
BOOM!
Moderator deleted my responce and contacted me with this:

Directing insulting/offensive messages to others or otherwise demonstrating the intent to insult and/or create dissent is prohibited, as well as messaging not deemed to be courteous or respectful. The context of submitted material very much matters here and will be examined against the surrounding details or discussion.
So, just be warned... if you think the poster is a BOT, don't actually say that :) All I sad was... "I'm assuming this is a BOT, but just in case"
The moderator also suggested similar steps you outlined, and then also suggested leaving the work to the Moderators.

Seen a number of folks fooled by the spam threads over the past couple of days. Friendly reminder to stay vigilant lest you waste your time!
