The sales are very frequent. I think there'll probably be one around Valentine's Day.

You can buy stuff individually for $1.99, so you could buy just the options you need to build the characters. Whatever you spend is deducted from the book as a whole, so you wouldn't lose out (so say you buy $10 worth of stuff from the PHB, then you could buy the PHB for $20, so still $30 overall). You could then wait until a sale comes to get the book at a discount.
By the way, they don't seem to do bundle sales any more, just books.

You can also use the homebrew tool to add things from the physical books if you have the physical books and more time than money, just don't publish it to the community.
I think they skipped a V Day sale as they had 15% off a couple of books they added to Maps around the same time. Easter is usually a safe bet for a sale if you can wait a month
It's tough to . . . I got a few magic items from recent games that are in some of the newer books . . . does anyone know how it works if I buy specific magic items for $1.99 now. I heard it discounts the book by the amount I bought the magic items for?
For example . . . I buy 2 magic items individually for $1.99 each for $3.98 total now
Later, I purchase the book those items are contained in which normally costs $29.99 which I hear then subtracts from the $3.98 I paid earlier?

Yes. I did something similar with Xanathar's - I bought all the Subclasses, then later bought the whole book.
Note - this isn't from my personal experience, but I was told this, but if you buy an individual item for $1.99,.it discounts it off the book but not the group option. So say you buy the Necromancer Subclass from the PHB. The PHB will be discounted down to $28, but if you buy all the Subclasses as a group (but not the book), it will still be the full $9.99. Therefore, if you're buying a single from a book where you're likely to want more of that type from that book but not the whole book, you're better off buying the group of the options.

I think I understand what you are saying . . . that if I just buy all the magic items (as a group) it will still be full price so I might as well just buy the book? In the book, I saw they had 30ish magic items I think, which would make it $60 if I bought each one individually, which is well over the price of the $29.99 book for sure

No, not quite, sorry.
Any money you spend on piecemeal options or groups of piecemeal options gets discounted.off the price of the book, but not the groups of piecemeal options.
So, for example, let's say I want the Necromancer Subclass for the Wizard. The piecemeal option is $1.99, the group of subclasses is $9.99 and the PHB is $29.99.
If I buy the piecemeal option, then I later decide to buy all the Subclasses (but not the PHB as a whole), then the PHB will be $28.00 (so discounted). However, if I want all the Subclasses, it will STILL be $9.99. No discount on that part. So if you want a piecemeal option and might want all of that type later (so in our example, if you want the Necromancer, might want all the PHB Subclasses, but don't want the PHB as a whole), then you might want to consider getting all the Subclasses now.

while buying magic items are an option they are by far the easiest thing to re create in the homebrew area you could save yourself some money by just doing that
how can I buy stuff individually? I don't see that option
If you go to the item on the website marketplace (it's not available on the app) and scroll to the bottom it's all listed there. It's not available on the 3rd party stuff or Deck of Many Things but should be available on everything else
Go to the page where they sell the book. Scroll down until you see this:
Then you can either add groups of options (like Magic Items, above) or individual items for $1.99.

Hi guys,
i’m new to DnD and doing my first game with friends in a couple of weeks.
Anyway looks like I need to buy the ‘players bundle’ to get access to create a character digitally without any work arounds.
But it seems to be quite expensive - are there any coupons currently active to reduce the price, everything I’ve found off google doesn’t work :(
Cheers
D&D Beyond doesn't use coupon codes anymore and hasn't done so for quite some time. Instead there are sales where various books will be discounted.
Find my D&D Beyond articles here

Thanks for the heads up fellas, appreciate it.
My new game will start on 2/2/24 - so hoping to try and secure them before then :/

That is supposedly exactly how it works. Never bought piecemeal myself, but that is how I understand it works.
