I'm just beginning my steps in the the LFG area and I was wondering actually: what is used most often? Do people actually run campaigns through the Beyond app/site a lot or is it mostly run through 3rd party sites like roll20 or Fantasy Grounds program etc? I have bought the PHB and Cauldron on D&DB because I'm a sucker for stuff(lol) but wondering if I'll even end up really using this in a game or just something to help me keep track of characters now and then?
We use roll 20, but a many (not all) of the characters are on D&DBeyond.
The main problem we have with D&DB is custom items and spells. You have to put them into D&DB properly, then add them to the character sheet. This takes a lot longer than just putting them roll20 and reading the notes everytime we use them.
I don’t use any other sites, just this one. It suits my needs, my whole 5e library is here, I can start a campaign and have my players join it and share that library with them. I can plan encounters and calculate the rewards. I can start a group PM for my campaign and easily communicate things to my players. Now they have a maps app that I use to facilitate combat for my PbP(M) campaigns too. I don’t run or participate in any live online games so I have no need for a realtime VTT or anything so that doesn’t matter to me. If that’s something you need or are interested in then others can likely give you much better advice than I can regarding those. And yes, the interface to input Homebrew content is a bit of a pain, but I’ve become quite proficient with it (one might even say I’ve developed expertise with that particular tool set 😂). I hope this has helped.
