No need to worry about how to keep the 2014 rules set and spells/ items per the latest update!
Amazing how this was there all along, and only after they got backlash did they trot this out.
This reveals that there was no reason outside of anti-consumer greed to try and force us partially into the new edition so the leap of just buying the books wouldn't be that far.
I'll be honest, and this is a complete shot in the dark: I honestly wouldn't be surprised if they fired the database guy and genuinely didn't know it'd be easier to just keep the 2014 rules on the record.

In all likelihood, they probably fired the staff members during the big layoffs who understood how the D&D community works, who would've told them how we would react to the proposed launch. Numbnuts...It's the decision-makers own short-sightedness that led to this backlash, and that will probably cost them more financially in the long run since the didn't just drive folks away from DDB, but also from D&D itself. Wake up, WizBro! We aren't a video game, and thus don't function like one. Maybe if the decision-makers actually played the game they'd have a better idea how things roll here.
Picture this you go to restaurant, order a meal that comes with a salad, the server says even though you paid for it the chef decided that you couldn't have it anymore, and then they expect you to pay extra to have it added when you already paid for it?
This question is insane, we already paid for this content as is and have supported this game as is and deserve to continue using it as is.
Agreed, but it should be noted, this is a course correction by WOTC, so thank you for the uproar. Without it, we would be in a different scenario. The original post included
If you wish to use the old version of a magic item or spell that has been replaced by its 2024 counterpart, you will need to create a homebrew copy of it and enable homebrew content on your character sheet. Then, you can add it to your character sheet.
The latest "update" now includes the following.
Players who only have access to the 2014 Player’s Handbook will maintain their character options, spells, and magical items in their character sheets. Players with access to the 2024 and 2014 digital Player’s Handbooks can select from both sources when creating new characters. Players will not need to rely on Homebrew to use their 2014 player options, including spells and magic items, as recommended in previous changelogs.
Bravo for the response and the backtrack.

No way, not a chance.
