So I have a headband that I have made that give a +1 to Charisma for a total of 30 min a day but can be used in 5 min increments. So I have the charges boxes no problem but what I am trying to figure out is how do I allow the character to wear it without giving the bonus until they click one of there 5 charges for the day. I am thinking it has something with the fixed value and that you can use some type of special character to give it a conditional value. some help would be greatly appreciated.
I played around with this, and I don't see any way to make it tie to charges, possibly because DND beyond can't track the time spent, so for example if you were able to tie it to a charge, you'd click the charge and it would add the bonus, but after the time is up how would the bonus be removed?
I'm thinking what you will have to do is either use the equip toggle or the attunement toggle to turn the bonus to charisma on and off that way.
Synieth is correct. There is currently no way to set up temporary effects on D&D Beyond such as that from Mage Armor, Barbarian Rage, or what you describe here. Your best workaround is to advise the player to equip it when activated, and unequip it when not activated. This should accurately give and remove your bonus.
Well that is to bad. Do you think the devs would try and eventually incorporate features like this. I know BEYOND hasn't been around that long but with this being, as I see it, the nicest tools set from a developer built for their system they would want to make it the most capable it could be. Oh also thanks for helping me out! At least now i know I have to come at it from a different direction. Thanks again.
I imagine that it would be something they would like to do, I feel like it may have even been mentioned at one point as something they would like to find a way to do 'down the road', but there is a lot more to do that has greater effect that is a priority. For example, Druid wildshapes are very unsupported by the current sheet and is a complex feature that needs that support - whereas smaller more temporary effects like Mage Armor, or a brief +1 CHA bonus - become easier to handle with quick notations. I am aware that wild shape functionality is on the current "set" plans. They also have other functionality to worry about, such as source management and campaign management as well.
However, the longer DDB is around, the better and better it gets! Just the difference from when they came out of beta to now is astounding.
I have faith that they will find a solid function for getting temporary effects to work (perhaps with a round counter) in the future, but for now thankfully the system is customizable enough for handy workarounds! I am happy I was able to help out in that regard. :)
I agree with Mellie across the board. Adding on to the post, I think a clickable buff/debuff would be implemented long before a timed buff because time in game is nearly impossible to translate out of game due to the variance in how long a round can take. The closest to timing I could see would come in the form of some type of round tracking mechanism for the DM, but that’s most definitely down the road. This would only apply to combat, but could be useful for those 1 minute/until next turn/round buffs.
My suggestion for implementing this in the current system is to give the item 6 charges (one for each 5-minute chunk) and have them tick them off when they use it, remembering to add +1 to Charisma checks. I think it’s easier to remember to add +1 than it is to track how many 5-minute charges are left.
