So I was wondering, as the title implies. Has anyone here had a situation where they were asked by the DM to make a character for a mid to high (10 to 20 plus depending on house rules) game. Where as part of your back story you created an item (weapon, vehicle etc) that he/she now still possesses by the time they meet the rest of the group. Only for that item or thing to cause serious issues both in terms of plot and gameplay balance?
If not you did anyone else? What was it and what happened?
Also on a different note were there any official items used in a game you were in or DM of that ended up being used in a way no one was expecting?
I ask because while this hasn't happened to me yet I have been watching various D and D stories on YouTube (from YouTubers such as Puffin Forest). And I curious if this is a somewhat regular problem or not? Well that and I just like reading and watching other peoples Tabletop roleplaying stories.
Last session the characters had a really tough fight with a squad of goblins, a flock of harpies, a basilisk, and a greater basilisk (not all at once, but all in one session). There wasn't really any big reward for the party at the end, so when they searched the basilisk's cave, I let them find a pair of basilisk eggs. After all, they are valuable to some wealthy exotic collectors and I figured the party could sell the eggs back at port or trade them for something interesting along the way.
Needless to say, selling the basilisk eggs is not what the party decided to do. I really should have seen that one coming :)

Daawwwww not going to lie as someone who has a soft spot for animals and likes snakes this would probably be me as well. But the question now remains (and hopefully an update) will the eggs be allowed to hatch? I sense that the potential for mischief is well in place.
I would prefer to give the party what they want. But I can buy myself a little time to figure out how i want to implement it and hopefully do a better job planning for the future. Having a pet who can turn just about anything to stone with a few bad die rolls has a lot of possibility for unforeseen consequences.

Aye, it will also be interesting to see who in the group if anyone wants to try and train them to be mounts when they are fully grown. Or if anyone decides it might be too dangerous to keep them after all for the reason you just stated.

It'll *probably* result in the party needing a hefty dose of Stone to Flesh spells - and more than one person capable of casting it.
Worth it if they can pull it off though without everyone turning into stone first.
I will raise them with love and cuddles.
Any ideas for a name/ names?
