I'm debating trying my hand to DM a PbP, since I'm in a couple as a player, but would really like to do combat maps. Theater of the mind is cool, sometimes, but it's often hard to remember where everything is, more so when combat happens over multiple days of posts.
I've seen some different styles of maps on here, so I'm curious what some options are for creating them, and keeping them updated. Specifically for ease.
One idea I had was to use Google Sheets, and just resize all the cells to be square. I could even update that on mobile by just moving the letter assigned for the character or mob to a different square.
Any other favorite ways to map out combat on here?
I'd probably do the Google Sheets method you just mentioned, though I don't know if there's a way to place an image as a "background" on GS. I would need something a bit more in depth than just slashes for walls here and there.

PbP characters: Allison Adrova - Reign of the Dragon King Delilah Thorne - Eidolons of Eramyth Melody Velias (Spy) - Power Trip
I use google drawings. I use the map as a background image and the place small images overtop as tokens for the PC's and mobs. I publish to the web and use image link provided. You don't need to host it anywhere. You can the tokens around and the image updates for you.

That's a pretty good idea. You would be able to edit each square with relevant data.
