Any one else wish there was an option to opt out of the Spell Slot style casting for Spell Points in the character creator? Would be an awesome option to add imo.
As a work around you can make a feat with limited use data for numbers of uses equal to the spell points. Rather than "using" the spell slots, just deduct the amount from this. As a feat it can be tied to short/long rests as appropriate to automatically refresh when you use the rests.

Will be using these for my Wizard. Made a feat that does what is explained above. It scales with level as well! this is good for full spellcasters (wizards, clerics, druids, bards, sorcerers).
Edit: I made 3 feats for functionality-sake and attempted to make the feats public but came back rejected sue to it being copyright and a note to not publish homebrew that mimics rules from the DMG... oh well.
They plan to add a bunch of missing options to the character sheet this year. They never mention which ones specifically, but I'm hoping it is all of them (from the books, customization/homebrew would be a different project).
There is a minor problem. The ideal system is one where you can take your character and play it at any given table. If not the actual character, at least you should be able to fulfill the concept and make a new one. Every optional rule that gets stuck in makes it harder and harder to do that. Feats and Multi-classing are both optional, but you can imagine the howls of outrage if they took them back out of the system. They have become mandatory now unless you're a really strict DM. I'm pretty strict myself, but not that much.
There's still a ton of things left to do. You can get a magical container, but you can't reduce your Encumbrance with it. A Bag of Holding weights 15 pounds, and you can put a lot of stuff into it in the game, but the character sheet doesn't let you do that. So you just increase your Encumbrance instead by 15 pounds. A lot of people are hoping that they will fix that soon, but they have a huge amount of work, and most people want the new stuff implemented instantly. "It's just a few lines of code..." is something the devolopers hear all the time. Even when it is, there's usually something mechanical about the servers, or something else, that makes it not as easy as people tend to think.
Don't hold your breath about anything as optional as Spell Points being put in place, since it pretty much would make it impossible to play in any other game that wasn't using them to begin with.

Oh yeah, they actually showed off containers prototypes in a dev update a while back. This will be coming out soon (probably, definitely this year as part of the character sheet backlog update).
I don't know what you mean that supporting an optional rule will make you unable to play the default. Unless you mean that it is superior and everyone will want to use it (which I don't exactly disagree with). It will obviously be togglable and off by default like other optional rules.
I'd love to see Containers at last. That's great news! And yes, Spell points would be a whole lot less restricting and more powerful. Everyone would love them. You remember what people said about 4th edition? "That's just not D&D." :-)

Yes, but they're stupid.
WotC are the only people who get to decide what D&D is. D&D is a brand, and they publish it. If people are saying 4e being different meant it wasn't "D&D for them" then 5e also isn't D&D for them because it's very different too.
Spell Points is already being used in games. Even on here. There are ways to get a cumbersome version of it working on here already. So, making it easier isn't going to be some huge massive difference - and it's already an option presented in DMG so saying Spell Points "isn't D&D" is also like saying using Standard Array or Point Buy isn't D&D, or using Feats, or Madness/Sanity scores, or Injuries, or anything from extra books like Xanathar's Guide to Everything or Tasha's -- they're all optional rules just like Spell Points.

Yes. They said they will add this option eventually, but no eta.

Another (less elegant) solution could be to use electrum or another unused currency as your point pool.
