Based on feedback, yes this would be too strong. Thanks all.
So - my group is having their first ever meeting. None of us have played D&D before so we are going through the 'Lost Mines of Phandelver' with the pre-made characters.
Except for me, I created a Barbarian.
Now I know Barbarian's get 2 rages per day. But, I am not sure how often our group will "long rest".
Was considering talking with the DM about getting them or getting "half" my rages back on a short rest. Just so I can more often use my class feature.
Given that all of you are new, I would discourage you from changing the mechanics (rules) of your character. Play it as written for now. Even without the rage, you will be effective in combat; the rage just makes you more so.
Also, since you are playing Lost Mines and most of the group is using the premade characters, please pass on a message to your DM for me: The DM needs to read all of the character backstories before you start play. The book will not tell you this, but it is important. It is especially important for one character in particular, where some thought needs to go into how that impacts certain encounters. If your DM has an account here, they are welcome to direct message me and I can provide more info.

Sure - I will talk to him about that. Do you know which character is the most important? We have all the pre-mades in our group but then had a guy drop out so we are left. The "Folk-Hero" fighter I believe.
The rogue's backstory is the one the DM needs to do the most thinking about, and will probably need to talk separately with that player about some things. I'd be happy to tell your DM how we handled it at our table--not that he needs to do what we did, but it might help generate ideas. We were also essentially brand new to D&D when we did Lost Mines. My husband and I had played 1e when we were teens, but hadn't played since, and our kids had never played. It's a great starting point.
The other backstories have some nice "hooks" for some of the side quests and the like, so it's good if the player pays attention to them, and it's helpful if the DM knows about them, but the rogue's takes the most planning ahead.

Barbarians are already insanely powerful in combat. That would make them even more powerful. I'd say that would overpower them.
